Nigeriainitsearlycolonialperiod.
OnJuly10th,1886,TheRoyalNigerCOmpanywasgrantedaRoyalCharterto
developtheresourcesofNigeria,acquiredintheTreatyofBerlin,fortheBritish
economy.PartoftheconditionsforofferingtheRoyalNigerCompanyexclusive
rightstosuchenormousterritorieswasthattheCompanywouldprovidethe
resourcesneededtoexploitandexporttheresources.Increatingthischarter,the
Britishgovernmentdidnotengageinvoluntaryormutuallybeneficialexchanges
withAfricanlandowners.Instead,theRoyalNigerCompanywasofteninvolved
intheconfiscation,usuallythroughforce,ofAfricanlands.Throughthisprocess,
landthatwasownedcommunallybyAfricanethnicgroupswascapturedandthe
allrightsofittransferredtoEuropeanbusinessenterprises.
