Johnson, Kim. "What's Wrong With Hunting?" Peta2com Site Wide Activity RSS. N.p., 29 Jan.
2009. Web. 08 Apr. 2016.
Author Kim Johnson is a woman that has been writing bogs for a good amount of time on
several different topics throughout the world. She stays in Hollywood California but she grew up
in Oregon and attended university of Oregon school of Journalism and Communication. Before
working for PETA she worked in the music industry and at many animal shelters. Kim dislikes
animal cruelty and of course Sea World. She is a strong believer in rescuing animals from
shelters and adopting them, such as the one she adopted named Baxter, which is a Chihuahua.
Primary Source: In this blog Kim the author shows very disturbing photos of animals
being hunted, but not all of them are killed. Some of these animals she is showing have wounds
and arrows sticking out of them where hunters made a bad shot on the animal. In her main point
for the first picture of the deer, it was poorly shot with a bow and arrow to the nose, which did
not kill the deer but severely hurt the animal. She explains that instead of just killing it with one
good shot by the hunter, now this deer has to go through a painful death and will try to find
somewhere soothing for it to lay down. Looking into more detail the author explains the statistics
of how the animals are hurt in the game of hunting. She showed statistics that really stuck out to
me was duck hunting and how over 3 million ducks go unretrieved every year. Kim also takes
into account of the counter argument of people saying we hunt to prevent overpopulation, but
she comes back with the concept of nature has the tendency to regulate the population. Nature
has a tendency to have starvation and disease, but this is what allows the population to stay
regulated and only the strong and the smartest will live. Hunters take this out of proportion
though when they go out and hunt for the biggest, strongest, and the healthier ones to feed on.
This source is very useful to my research because it goes into the account of the other
side looking into why hunting is cruel and not right. When looking into the main topic of hunting
this blog shows a clear description of how hunting can be bad for our society. I find it very useful
because it also brings in statistics of how hunting is looked at when the animals are not preserved
correctly for the proper use of hunting them and then skinning them for food.
After reading this article it clearly shows why people do not like the look on hunting and
all of the problems within it. To relate this to me I understand the article very well, but I do not
fully agree with that hunting is a bad thing. I look at hunting as an escape from reality and put
into the field of nature. When I go hunting it is not just about trying to kill the animal I am trying
to hunt but to also see the wildlife and enjoy the scenery around me. Also if it so happens that I
make a bad shot on the animal I also have a backup plan to what I am going to do if I make a
poor shot and only wound the animal. I do find this source to be credible even though this topic

of research is based solely on opinions. This is credible because Kim has plenty of field
experience when working with animals in a shelter that are hurt and abused and poorly taken
care of.
"Why Hunt." Why Hunt. Ihea Usa/ International Hunter Education Association, Fall 2002. Web.
08 Apr. 2016.
The author of this article is the International Hunting Education Association, which is a
group that is well known all across the nation. This group does plenty of hunter safety courses
and shows hunters the full understanding on why hunting is important in todays society. This
group also shows people that hunting is not all about the thrill of killing the biggest score in the
woods, but taking the sport and making it into the aspect of getting food for your family and
friends the way you specifically want to get it. The authors of this association go into specific
details on why people enjoy to hunt and the reasons why they do.
General Internet Source: This source shows you how much hunters love animals even
though the kill them too. This sounds and looks kind of ironic to most but to people that are new
to hunting or people that have always hunted understand and fully realize the aspects of hunting
and what it does to people. This source also shows a great explanation of how people take care of
and protect their chickens and gardens in return to get food from them. The source explains that
hunting is not all about killing, but hunters goes hunting for the wildlife experience that most do
not get to see. The article shows that yes it is easier to get food from the store that might be less
expensive but many people are the do it yourself type and enjoy the fact that they can survive
on their own. Many people look at as hunting as connecting back with our ancestors and doing
the things they once did to simply survive and flourish in that time. I like that this source goes
into show direct responses from hunters. It shows that some hunters enjoy to hunt because it is
relaxing and makes you feel like you are away from it all. The fact of being on your own and
having the ability to say and do pretty much anything you want is very relieving.
This source is very useful to my research because it shows the side of why hunting is
good and why people enjoy it and do it each and every year. I believe this is a very interesting
source for those that do not understand why people love to hunt. I also think this is a good source
for those that cannot find the words to describe why they hunt and enjoy killing an animal. This
source is also very useful for the look on nature and how the littlest things can change your
perspective on nature.
I do find this source to be very credible since it is coming from a hunting organization
that focuses on hunting and safety of the individuals that are taking part in it. I find it credible
because it gets hunters thoughts and saying to unravel the many mysteries of why people hunt
and the reasons for it. I can relate to this source in a very enlightening way because I also find
hunting to be a very relaxing and enjoyable time. When I go hunting and end up coming home
empty handed with the animal I was hunting, I still have a great out there in the woods listening
and hearing all of nature has to offer. I also believe hunting heightens your senses as the article
explained. Sitting in a deer stand all day or just for an hour you will experience the most
unimaginable things that nature has to offer. Talking to many hunters you will soon realize the
ones that enjoy it for everything and not just the killing aspect. There has been plenty of times I
have been in the woods or on the edge of a pond watching the sun rise, and then seeing
everything in nature begin to awake and begin a new day. This sight is like no other and is very
hard for man to fully explain why he goes out every morning to 80% of the time come home

with nothing in return, but for myself I never come home empty handed or empty of experiences.
I come home with the since of relaxation and the thought of rejuvenation of what nature has to
offer us.
Krakauer, Jon. Into the Wild. New York: Anchor, 1997. Print.
Jon Krakauer is a preeminent writer of narrative non-fiction. His numerous bestsellers
include Where Men Win Glory, Under the Banner of Heaven, Into the Wild, and Into Thin Air.
He is editor of the Modern Library Exploration series. Jon is knows for writing books with the
meaning of the outdoors and everything it has to offer. When writing into the wild there were
plenty of times he talked about hunting and living off the land in his book. The author shows in
all of his writing the love he has for the outdoors and all that nature has to offer. The book Into
the Wild is book that is known throughout the nation and is one of his most popular books. It was
a story about a man that just graduated college and is respected very well for his family being
this perfect family on the east coast with a lot of money. The book takes you on an wild
adventure across the country to get away from society and to live on your own.
Book Source: The Book Into the Wild shows how even someone that has everything they
need to be successful in society changes his mind and wants to live off the land and with nature.
The book goes into detail showing that Chris, the main character, once was a guy in Emory
University, which is a nice private university which would cost a fortune to go to today. The
book explains that he gave up everything to just get away from it all and do everything on his
own and not live up to the standards of the white young male back in the day. This book I found
was very interesting once he was out on his own in nature trying to find things to eat and he soon
learned how to hunt and preserve the meat that he got and understood how to separate so much
food for every day. The book showed how much Chris enjoyed being out in the middle of
nowhere, and the fact that nobody was anywhere near him was just fascinating to him. The book
also went into show that he was not the only one that wanted to live on their own. Chris ran into
many people along the way that helped him proceed through his journey to the West.
This source I find it to be useful for my research because it shows that someone that
never really experienced nature and hunting at all before in his youth wanted to try it one day.
After going so far into the trip of going West if Chris did not like it he could have turned around
and went back to living his normal life. Once the he saw the wildlife and all the nature he soon
realized that this was the place for him. Once he went hunting for food he found it to very
enjoyable and very rewarding when he was able to kill for his own food and preserve the wat he
wished too. I also find this to be useful because being in nature the whole time throughout the
book the reader is able to see what Chris sees and can be very motivational to do something
similar to what he once did. Although at the end of the book Chris did die of starvation because
he ran out of rice, and did not have anything to hunt. Chris did have enough time to make it back
to civilization to get food but he waited too long, and I also believe that Chris did not want to go
back to civilization. I think Chris wanted to figure it all out on his own.
This source is a very credible source because it is taking someone that never really
experienced the full comprehension of the outdoors and putting him in the situation of living off
the land. I find it very useful because throughout the book Chris explains what he sees and the
affects nature puts on him. I can relate to this in a lot of ways, when looking at this college kid
that never did anything in the nature or every really experienced it, now seeing him go into this
state of mind is fascinating. Being in college myself I feel and see everything that society has to

offer us. Once fall comes around though I soon find myself in the woods setting up for the year
to hunt my land. I find myself in ah every year when I find a new spot to hunt. I enjoy doing this
because when in the wood if you look to your right and then to your left everything is different.
Each piece of nature has its own specific ways of showing itself. I have been on many trips with
my dad going hunting for the whole weekend where we will stay out all day and then once the
sun goes down we set up camp and eat. These trips make me realize what it is like to have
nothing at all and living off the land to survive.
Platt, John. "Going off the Grid: Why More People Are Choosing to Live Life Unplugged."
MNN. Responsible Living, 14 Nov. 2012. Web. 08 Apr. 2016.
The author John Platt is a freelance journalist specializing in environmental issues. He
writes a lot about endangered species and in his spare time he enjoys to draw cartoons. John
writes about why people choose to live off the grid and provide for themselves. This is a very
interesting article looking past just getting away from society but people wanting to be with the
nature and do things the way they believe its supposed to be done. He clearly explains that
people that do this understand nature and how things work in nature then most people even
comprehend in todays society.
Secondary Source: This source goes into great detail talking about why people choose to
live off the grid and to get away from everything. In this source it also explains that people
choose to live off the grid to be more environmentally green. This is true because living off the
grid means you have to do everything for yourself. For instance living off the grid you will need
to find and hunt and kill for your food. This is better for the environment because the meat that
you would eat it not put in with any preservatives and is not chemically engineered to get more
flavor or additives to it.
I find this source very useful for this project because it talks about going off the grid just
as Chris did. I like the fact that it goes through the aspects of being this green type of person. I do
believe this is a good and credible source because it is coming from MNN, which is a major
website company that is known for these articles of debatable topics. John Platt has been
studying life off the grid for a while now so he is very influential on the entire aspect of leaving
everything behind and living off the land.
I do find this source very useful for the paper I will be writing in the near future because
it relates so much to Chris in the book. I can relate to this article a lot because where I use to live
in Ohio I lived in the middle of nowhere. Living like this is really hard but also very rewarding. I
can remember countless time I have went out into the woods with my dad and my brother to cut
down dead trees and make fire wood out of them. I can also relate to living of the land by always
having our own family owned farm in Ohio. My Uncle and my grandpa have been working on
the farm their whole life, which was passed down from my Great Grandparents.
Dobrzynski, Rebecca. "Why Love the Outdoors? - Perfect Fuel." Perfect Fuel. N.p., 28 Oct.
2011. Web. 10 Apr. 2016.
The author Rebecca Dobrzynski is someone that is very passionate about the outdoors
and how time is spent their. She believe being in touch with nature is something that we should
all have to improve our mental functioning skills. She explains what the outdoors provide for us
in the long run. For instance the planting of greenery items is something that we would all take

into account for being a cognitive function. The greenery that people plant is sometimes just the
fact of enjoying the view of the plants and the since of accomplishment. Being in nature also has
showed her that she is able to be less stressed than usual. She also explains that she is the type of
person that instead of doing a workout in the gym with all these machines she would rather go
outdoors and go on a hike or take the canoe out for a good cardio workout.
Secondary source: This source goes into detail on why people enjoy the outdoors. This
site has plenty of areas where you can go and look around and find some more interesting things
about the outdoors. The source explains that many people do not have the access to the limited
outdoor places that we have. These people that do not have this access usually join a gym to get
the similar workout that you would be getting when out in the wild. This source also explains
how people feel better after spending the day in nature either hunting or running or just hiking
through the trails.
I do find this source to be very useful for my project because my project is based on
being in the nature and how to survive in nature effectively through hunting and why it is very
important to hunt for your food. This source shows many of people that going to the gym to
workout is not as enjoyable or mind enabling as going into nature to perform your workout.
I find this source to be very credible because the author of the article is part of the Perfect
Fuel team which is a group that does many of activities outdoors. She has been part of this group
for a while now which can be a biased opinion on the outdoors. I can relate to this source in
several ways and one being the aspect of working out in nature rather than going to a gym to do
just the same workout where it is completely crowded. I can also relate to this source because I
do love to go hiking and canoeing which I do a lot of with my dad and my mom during the
summer.
Rail, Kevin. "Nutritional Values of Venison vs. Beef." Nutritional Values of Venison vs. Beef.
SFGATE, n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2016.
The author of this article Kevin Rail is someone that is very understanding and knows a
lot about different types of meat. I could not believe that he called deer meat Venison beacause I
have not heard many people say in before but it for sure does explain that Venison is a meat just
from deer instead. The author has done plenty if study on the whole topic of meat and what meat
is technically better for you.
Secondary Source: In this article it is very clear which meat is better for you all the way
around. Deer meat is clearly the better meat because it has less fat than the beef will ever have.
Even though beef is cheaper for everyone and is a lot easier to get is just is not as healthy as deer
meat. In this article it goes through a list of things on which one is better for you. Deer meat in
general is better for you if you know what you are doing when preserving the meat. The only bad
thing about deer meat is that sometimes they can have a small amount of lead in the meat from
the shot of the gun and the bullet penetrating the deer. This mostly just effect kids six and under
and women that soon to become pregnant or are pregnant.
I find this source to be very reliable and useful for this paper because of the topic of
hunting I am going to have plenty of counter arguments saying why hunt when you can just go
get meat at the store or a lot easier and cheaper. It may be all these things but what is really better
for you is what I look into as well. I also look into the fact that it is important to me to be able to

kill for my own food and too preserve it all to the way of my liking. This is also very remorseful
to me as well to know that this is the way that all of my family and ancestors did back in the day
to provide food for the family.
I can relate to this article a lot with knowing which meat is going to be better for you. I
have always been taught growing up that killing and preserving your own meat is the better and
healthier way than any other. I have also learned the safety of taking care of the meat and also to
take the full advantage of the deer you kill. Ever since I killed my first deer I was the one to gut
it skin it and preserve the meat. Growing up I learned this from watching my dad when I was
young and I also watched my uncle as I went hunting with him a lot when I was younger. Now
that I hunt on my own I clearly understand the importance of killing and getting all the meat
possible and not wasting the life of the deer that is providing me with the meat.
