Coteaching Part III

Name: Caroline Reineke

Date: November 10, 2014

How does this project contribute to your understanding of how coteaching works in
real life settings?
This project helped contribute to my understanding of how coteaching works
in real life settings by allowing me to evaluate the coteaching process as a whole. I
enjoy being able to evaluate my lesson and see what went well and what needs to
be worked on. This will help me in my future coteaching endeavors. This project
allowed me to apply my knowledge about coteaching to a real life classroom and
gain valuable coteaching experience. I enjoyed presenting my lesson to a class, and
I learned how to present information in a coteach setting. This experience will help
me when I am coteaching with general education teachers in my future career.
On my honor, as an Aggie, I have neither given nor received unauthorized
aid on this academic work.

Evaluation of Coteaching Process:

The coteaching process was successful overall. My mentor teacher and I
communicated well through each step of the process. He aided me in creating my
lesson and listened to what his role would be during the lesson. Before the lesson
was taught, we had several conversations to decide what my role would be and
what his role would be. This helped because together we discussed the needs of the
students, and this conversation defined our roles. We both believe in putting the
needs of the students before anything else. My mentor teacher was very
encouraging before I taught my lesson, and he ensured me he was confident I would
succeed in delivering the King M&M lesson.
When I taught the lesson, it went very smoothly and I believe the students
left with new information about monarchies and democracies. All of the students
enjoyed the role-playing activity and were very engaged throughout the lesson. As I
lead the lesson, Mr.Ireland monitored behaviors and ensured the students were
giving the proper amount of M&Ms. I watched him help certain students pull out the
right number of M&Ms and tell students they must pull out the proper number of
M&Ms. This helped me focus on leading the activity and help students understand
the difference between a monarchy and a democracy. Mr.Ireland followed the
instructions on the lesson plan exactly and this helped me only have to worry about
leading the lesson, rather than help students one-on-one or manage behaviors.
The biggest strength throughout this coteaching process was communication.
Mr.Ireland and I work well together, and he was willing to help me in the planning
and teaching of the lesson. The communication helped me be confident in
delivering my lesson and helped me think about possible challenges that could arise

while teaching. I was able to capture the students attention throughout the lesson,
which is another strength. All of the students were attentive throughout the lesson
and participated in the activities.
In the future I hope to have a coteach lesson using the team teaching
approach. I think this would be a great way for students to learn information from
two different perspectives. This would help students understand new material with
multiple viewpoints. I hope to utilize all of the different kinds of coteaching to
understand them through experience.
