Lesson Title: Nutrient Wise
Name of Secondary CTE Course: Family and Consumer Science Investigation
Curriculum Framework Unit: Unit 6: Determine the personal benefits of making healthy food & nutrition choices
Standard(s): 6.2.2 Investigate the six basic nutrient groups and the primary function of each
Objectives: The learners will be able to..
1. Define the six basic nutrients and their primary functions
2. Identify the differences between the six basic nutrients and why each nutrient is important
3. Classify foods based on the nutrient classes the food belongs to
Content to be presented in lesson:

Nutrient a chemical substance that comes from the food you eat to help maintain your body
Six nutrients Proteins, Fats, Carbohydrates, Vitamins, Minerals, Water
Proteins -- build and repair cells, fight infection, and make blood strong. These body builders are made up of
amino acids. Complete proteins have all 8 amino acids that the body needs. Complete Proteins: fish, meat,
chicken, eggs, milk, and soybeans. Incomplete Proteins: dried beans, lentils and peas, nuts, breads, noodles, grains
and cereals
Fats provide energy and fatty acids and helps digestion. 3 types: saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated
Examples: cheese, butter, nuts, meats, dressings, and chocolate
Carbohydrates provide energy (calories) for muscles, nerves, and the brain. Two types: simple and complex.
Simple: sugars (honey and jam), complex: starches (breads, cereals, and pasta) and fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole
grains)
Vitamins essential for growth and health. Main function is to facilitate and regulate body processes. Two types:
fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins. Fat-Soluble: dissolve in fats and can be store in fatty tissues
(vitamins A, D, E, and K). Water-Soluble: dissolve in water and are not stored in the body (vitamin C, Riboflavin,
niacin, and folate)
Minerals build bones, teeth, blood, and helps the body use energy. Each mineral has a specific function in the
body and can be found in different sources. Examples: Calcium, Magnesium, Fluorine, Iodine, Iron, Zinc
Water transports other nutrients to cells, carries waste away, and aids in digestion. Makes up more than half
your body weight. Examples: water, juices, beverages, solid foods like fruits and vegetables

Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Allotted time: 6 minutes

Hello everyone! Im Miss Teekell and Im going to be teaching you all today. To start off can everyone write down their
10 favorite foods on the back of your worksheet? (wait a couple minutes while they complete). Does anyone want to share
their very favorite food they came up with? (listen to answers for a couple minutes). Great, now that we are in the mindset
of food, can anyone tell me why do we eat food? Is there a purpose? What do you think? (wait for answers). Yes! We eat
food to stay alive. It helps us grow and maintain our bodies.
Learning activities/procedures:

Allotted time: 38 minutes

[Pass out worksheet] As we go through the different nutrients today I want you all to fill in the blanks on this worksheet.
All of this information is very important, so be sure to fill in all of the blanks.
[PowerPoint shown while students complete follow along and fill out the notes worksheet.]
What is a nutrient? Does anyone have any ideas? (wait for answers). Yes, a nutrient is a chemical substance that comes
from the food you eat to help maintain your body. The energy you need for the metabolic processes in your body and for
maintaining a constant internal environment comes from these nutrients. So if you think about all the basic reactions going
on in your body to keep you breathing, your heart beating, your brain working and allowing you to move about, they all
derive their energy from nutrients.
What are the six nutrients you cant live without? Does anyone know of any nutrients before we go through them? (wait
for answers.) Yes they are proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water.
Let first look proteins. Proteins build and repair cells, fight infection, and make blood strong. These body builders are
made up of amino acids. Complete proteins have all 8 amino acids that the body needs. Can anyone thing of some
examples of proteins? (wait for answers and then move to the next slide). Examples of complete proteins: fish, meat,
chicken, eggs, milk, and soy beans. Examples of incomplete proteins: dried beans, lentils and peas, nuts, breads, noodles,
grains and cereals.
Now lets look at fats. Fats provide energy and "fatty acids," and helps digestion. There are three types of fats. There are
saturated fats raise cholesterol levels, causing heart disease. Alternatively, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats help
to lower bad cholesterol, decreasing the risk of heart disease. Can anyone think of some foods that would have fats in
them? (wait for answers then move the next slide). Some sources of fats include: cheese, butter, nuts meats, dressings, and
chocolate.
Our next nutrient is carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide energy (calories) for muscles, nerves, and the brain. They also
provide bulk and helps the body digest fats. There are actually two types: simple and complex. What kinds of foods do
you think you can find carbohydrates? (wait for answers then move to the next slide) Simple are usually sugars. Some
examples are honey or jam. Complex are starches and fiber. Some fiber sources include: fruits, vegetables, and whole
grains. Some starch sources include: breads, cereals, and pasta.
Lets look at vitamins. Vitamins are essential for growth and health. Their main function is to facilitate and regulate body
processes. Your body cannot manufacture vitamins; you must obtain them through foods. Vitamins help the body use food
and work properly. There are two types of vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins: dissolve in fats and can be stored in fatty tissues
of the body. Water-soluble vitamins: dissolve in water and are not stored in the body. Examples of fat-soluble vitamins are
Vitamins A, D, E, and K. Examples of Water-Soluble Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Folate. What do you
think we eat that gives us vitamin C? (answers). Yes citrus fruits, broccoli, and tomatoes are great sources of vitamin C.

Another essential nutrient is minerals. Minerals build bones, teeth, blood, and helps the body use energy. For example
calcium helps in maintaining bone strength. Minerals are found in every part of a diet. Some of the minerals include:
calcium, magnesium, fluorine, iodine, iron, and zinc. Each of these minerals have a specific functions in the body and can
be found in from different sources. For example calcium helps build bones and teeth and helps muscles and nerves work.
Where do you think we can find calcium? (answers?) Yes dairy products or leafy green vegetables are good sources.
Our final nutrient isnt something you would think of as eating, but maybe drinking it. Does anyone have an idea of what
this nutrient could be? (wait for answers) Yes its water! Water transports other nutrients to cells, carries wastes away, aids
digestion and more. Another cool fact is water makes up more than half your weight! What kind of foods do you think
you can find water? (wait for answers). You can find water in simply water, juices, and some solid foods like fruits, or
vegetables.
Did anyone carve any pumpkins for Halloween? (Wait for answers). Did anyone eat their pumpkins contents? (wait for
answers). Well you can eat them. Since we can eat them which of the six nutrients do you think pumpkins have? (wait for
answers). Yes there is water, vitamins, and minerals.
Lets look at some other examples. How about a chocolate? (wait for answers) Yes it would be a fat.
What about a hot dog with a bun? (wait for answers) Yes it would be protein for the hot dog and a carbohydrate for the
bun. What kind of carb is it? (wait for answers) Yes, its a complex carbohydrate and its a starch.
Closure/Review of Content:

Allotted time: 4 minutes

Okay on the bottom of your note sheet you have a place where you are to come up with two examples of foods you ate
yesterday and list which of the six nutrients you think it contains.
Does anyone want to share with the class? (Hear from volunteers and guide them in the right direction, if their answers
are not correct) Why do you think it has those nutrients? Why doesnt it have (ex. Protein) in that food?
(hear from as many students as I can until the bell rings)
I hope you all have a wonderful Halloween weekend!
Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Allotted time: N/A

My assessment will be informal and formal. My informal assessment will be the completion of the notes worksheet and
class participation in the discussion of different types of foods as a class. The formal assessment will be taken from their
examples they give on the bottom of their notes worksheet.
Modifications for exceptional learners:
For this lesson some students may have trouble keeping up with the notes worksheet either because of special needs or
ESL, so I could print off completed worksheets to give to them after the lesson to fill in any gaps they may have had in
their notes.
In this particular classroom I have two special needs students. I will make sure they stay on task and seat them next to
high achieving learners. These high achieving learners will be able to help the two students that may need some extra
assistance in taking notes.
