Who am I?

Aims/Objectives:

High beginners - advanced


To strengthen rapport among students, repetition of family
vocabulary and displaying their own family members
Outcomes:
After completing this activity, students will be able to: identify
family members through their own family tree; get to know other
classmates family tree which will help develop a closer
relationship within the class; then being more comfortable to
present to the whole class.
Class Time:
2- 1hour 45 minute classes
Teacher Preparation Time: 10-20 minutes (creating power point of family vocabulary/teachers
family tree)

Procedure:
Reminder: Ask students if everyone has picture of family members, they should have it because
it was homework from previous class.
Session 1-Part 1: Family Vocabulary Practice
Note: During this time, make sure the students repeat the vocabulary word after you
sign it. Make sure they are signing it the right way (i.e. direction, place of area, etc.)
1. On the Family Vocabulary power point, go over each vocabulary word.
2. After each word try to use it in a sentence (i.e. mom- my mom lives on Kauai.)
Note: if students still do not understand the vocabulary word, spell it out for them.
Make sure all students understand the vocabulary and then go on to the next word.
3. After finishing the vocabulary, you will show your example of your family tree (on the
power point), providing a fact about each family member. For example pointing to the
picture on the screen to a man. You can say this is my dad; he works at American
Savings Bank and he loves to surf. After providing your family tree example tell the
students youre showing them how to do an activity theyre going to be doing in pairs.
Session 1- Part 2: Whos That (Pair Work)
1. Ask students to take out their pictures of their family members and get into pairs.
2. Describe the instructions (on the power point slide Activity 1)
Partner A will show pictures of their family members to Partner B
Partner B will pick/point at a person from Partner As family member and ask
whos that?

Partner A will talk about that particular family member describing a fact about that
specific family member
Then Partner A will pick/point at a person from Partner Bs family member and
ask whos that?
Partner B will talk about that particular family member describing a fact about that
specific family member
Switch back and forth until they have are finish with their family photos.
Note: If everyone is done with the activity and has more time, come back together as
a class and ask each group member to share one thing from their partners family
-If there is no time, come back together as a class and describe the presentation
they will have for next class
Presentation due next class: Create a family tree Power Point to present to the
whole class. (Show example/template of family tree on PPT)
Make sure there are pictures of family members and presenter describes:
Who the family member is (i.e. mom, dad, younger brother, aunty, etc.)
Their name
One fact about that specific family member
~5-7 minute presentation
Note: notify the student they will be recorded.
(The video will be emailed to them and they will have to watch their video and review
themselves on how they think they did on their presentation)
Before class ends:
Ask students what order they would want present for next class (write down the order).
Remind students to email their PPT the day before presentation day (to download all the
PPTs on the computer to get it ready by presentation day)
Session 2- Part 1: Presentation
1. Do a really quick over view of the family vocabulary to get them familiarized with the
vocabulary (should only take about 5-7 minutes, no mimicking from students just
showing the students the signs)
2. Have each student present their presentation (you may choose the order of the students
presenting)
Note: Make sure you record each presenter. Dont record during the whole time of
class. Stop recording after each presenter.
3. When everyone is finished presenting, discuss about their homework assignment on
their presentation:

a. Students need to write a short reflection on their own presentation 1-2
paragraphs
Questions the students need to answer:
i. How do you feel about your presentation?
ii. What went well in your presentation?
iii. What were some of the difficulties during your presentation?
iv. What can you improve on for future presentations?
