The Fall of the Roman Empire

6th Grade Ancient Cultures

I have used this before in a classroom, and I found that its as quick and
simple as formative assessments should be. I use colorful post-its and place
them on students desks. After a lesson, students take the time to write down
3 facts about what they thought was most valuable from the days lesson.
When finished writing, students take their post-its to the front board and
place under the written heading. I can then gauge what students have
learned, and what may need to be reiterated to them.

3. Analyze the emergence, expansion and decline of the Roman

Empire

1. Describe the major achievements of the Roman Era, such as legal,

artistic, architectural, technological, and literary
I would use this more towards the beginning of the unit to highlight different
aspects of the Roman Era.

Four Corners:
I just located this on Pinterest, and I thought that it was a great way to
assess students, as well as incorporate some movement into the lesson
when a brain break might be needed. I think in my case, I would use this
after teaching a concept. For example, I would ask a question. I would have
corners of the room labeled 1-4. I would then have students head to the area
of the room with the number that matches the main ideas or concepts of the
lessons. Students are prepared to head back to their seats, and write their
ideas on a note card to be collected by the teacher.

3. Analyze the emergence, expansion and decline of the Roman

Empire

1. Explain the transition from Roman Republic to Roman Empire including

the social structure, significance of citizenship and the development of
political institutions

This would be good to use with students when discussing Romes social
structure, why being a citizen was important, and politics.
Metacognition Thinking Sheet:
I decided this would be good to use for formative assessment, because it
really tells a lot of valuable information that students gather from the text.
This particular sheet talks about thinking, wondering, noticing, seeing,
feeling, and understanding. This is a good frame to have students use to
show what they have exactly gotten from the text.

3. Analyze the emergence, expansion and decline of the Roman

Empire

1. Summarize the factors that led to the decline of the Roman Empire
I think that this sheet would be good to use with students towards the end of
the unit. This sheet would assist them in summarizing up what all we have
learned.
Performance Assessment:
Again, I am doing Social Studies with a 6th grade Ancient Cultures class. The
unit topic is the Fall of the Roman Empire. I decided to have students create
a Newspaper. This would be used as the Performance Assessment. Students
will work in small groups to create their own newspaper. Items included in
the paper are based off of Marylands Standards for Social Studies. Students
must create headings that match the articles, as well as appropriate
graphics. Items that I want include in the newspaper are as follows:

Major achievements of the Roman Era

Social structure, significance of citizenship and the development of
political institutions
Transition from Roman Republic to the Roman Empire
Factors that lead to the decline of the Roman Empire

The newspaper itself will be a great way to assess the knowledge gained
during the unit.
