Artifact Rationale: Positive Support System
The Positive Behavior Support Plan was an assignment designed
to offer suggestions for understanding and developing a plan to
change the problem behavior and teach the child new skills. The
development of this artifact demonstrated my ability to assess student
behavior, determine its impact on student success, and then design,
implement, and evaluate supports that positively effect the students
behavior. The completion of this assignment demonstrated the Council
for Exceptional Children (CEC) Professional Standards 1: Learner
Development, 2: Learning Environments, and 7: Collaboration.
The first CEC Standard addressed the learner development and
individual learner differences. This standard states that special
education professionals must use understanding of development and
individual differences to respond to the needs of individuals with
exceptions. I demonstrated this when I placed the individual needs of
the student at the focus of this assignment. This artifact required me to
research the individuals past educational records to determine the
childs ability to learn and how those exceptionalities affect his
learning. During this project, I had to be able to select the proper
behavior support strategies based off best practices, my
knowledge/experience and collaboration with my colleagues.

The PBSP artifact also demonstrated CEC standard 2: Learner

Environments, which states that education professionals must create a
safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environment. This plan
was designed to provide safety for the student, staff, and the other
students in the classroom. The development of this plan made the
classroom environment conducive for learning to occur. This plan also
helped direct my response to the student and not take her actions
personally. It also designed a way for me to call for assistance when I
felt I was getting overwhelmed.
The last CEC standard addressed in this assignment was the use
of collaboration in the development of this plan. I showed mastery of
this standard through my collaborative meetings with the childs
parents and several colleagues with years of experience. This standard
also says that the collaboration needs to address the childs behavior
across a range of learning experiences. When we developed this plan,
the document would address the students behavior not only while in
class but also while out in the community. The plan was developed so
that when theses behaviors occur out in the community, such as on a
job site, there would be recommended strategies to use as well. This
plan was created with all of the students teachers in mind. When we
come together as a collective group, I feel we will be successful in
creating the best plan for the staff and the student.

I learned a lot in the completion of this project. The knowledge

and skills I learned in developing this plan will assist me throughout my
career as a teacher. Understanding that there is a reason for the
students behavior will help me seek alternative ways to address the
needs of the students. The completion of this project has also allowed
me to practice the skills needed to collect data and develop a plan
based on best practices. This assignment has given me a better
understanding of the proper supports that can assist my students in
controlling their behaviors.
