Vision Statement
I WILL:
1. Teach with passion and care about my students.
2. Teach students the many benefits of choosing to lead a
healthy lifestyle.
3. Teach, model, and develop the qualities necessary for my
students to become good citizens.
4. Give my students everything I have to help them reach his
or her full potential in a positive, disciplined, and
structured environment.

STUDENTS WILL:
1. Respect the teacher, their peers, and themselves.
2. Dress out every day.
3. Do everything to the absolute best of their ability.

Philosophy of Education
Exercise and recreation are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary,
because health is worth more than learning. Thomas Jefferson. I agree with Thomas Jefferson.

Without good health, it is probably more difficult to learn. The health of a child is very important
and I believe they need to be physically active to stay healthy. They should not only be
physically active, but hopefully enjoy it enough to continue it into adulthood. This is why I teach
Physical Education for children.

I feel its really important to teach children how to be

physically active so they will develop a healthy lifestyle far into their adult life.

Its a

challenging job, but rewarding.

So, how can a Physical Education instructor teach students to really enjoy physical
activity enough to continue it for the rest of their life?

This begins with an enthusiastic

instructor that puts children at the center of the Physical Education curriculum. I will ensure that
all the students are actively engaged in the lesson. This may include making accommodations
for special need students or simply giving extra praise to the less confident student. I will check
for understanding to ensure the students are learning. Students should be given the opportunity
to perform the tasks their instructor models. This is especially important in physical education,
because students need repetition to ensure movement competence. Learning in a Physical
Education classroom is sometimes hard to gauge. If a student leaves my class a more competent
mover than they entered, effective learning has occurred.
In my opinion, Physical Education helps shape students more so than any other subject in
schools. As a Physical Educator, it will be my duty to build professional relationships with my
students to ensure life skills are learned. Promoting things like character, work ethic, and a
positive attitude are things that will go a long way not just in a P.E. setting but for the rest of their
lives. The harsh reality is that they wont be the best at everything they do in P.E., in the
classroom, and just in life. I see an opportunity as a Physical Educator to be an advocate for
controlling the little things. Those little things include their attitude and effort. Some may see this

philosophy a little premature when considering the elementary aged student. In my opinion,
promoting these life skills will ensure greater students and human beings in the long run.
As a teacher, I have seen the importance of showing passion for your profession. Part of
that is actually being physically active yourself and being able to do what you preach. Too often
have I heard of Physical Educators promote a fit and healthy lifestyle but dont actually take part
in their own lives. I believe students will respect you so much more if you can do what youre
asking them to do.
In summary, I am very passionate about promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle amongst
children. Movement patterns of a child are shown to dictate how active an individual will be later
in life. Essentially, Physical Education will either make or break how healthy an individual will
be later into adulthood. With that being said, promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle is not the only
objective. P.E. is an opportunity to exercise those life skills like character, work ethic, and
attitude. I think too often classroom teachers get caught up teaching to the test and dont have
the opportunity to develop that aspect of their students. With that being said, its hard not to
become passionate about being a physical educator. Having a positive impact on a childs health
and wellbeing is not something that should be taken lightly.

Dear Parents,
My name is Mr. Henderson and I am currently in my last semester at Arizona State
University. I have always enjoyed school and learning. The content area that grabbed my

attention the most was Physical Education. Health and wellness are very important aspects in a
childs life and this is what I would like to offer your student. This semester is going to be filled
with different movements. Students will be able to identify what body part is used for what
exercises and why. We will be working hard this year and my expectations are that everyone try
their absolute best with a positive attitude. I want to make sure most importantly that ALL
students come to class with the appropriate P.E. attire; this will count towards their overall grade
for attendance and participation. Classroom behavior plays a major role because I expect my
students to respect the equipment, their peers, themselves, and the teacher. When an absence
occurs, I will offer make-up work to take home so they can still earn points for that day. This
year will be filled with excitement as your child will be working hands on with equipment and
learning about the education behind our daily exercise. If at any time you need to reach me, you
can contact me via email or phone. My email is Andre.Henderson@asu.edu and my phone
number is (480) 278-4299. Thank you so very much for your support and I look forward to an
exciting and educational school year.
Sincerely,

Mr. Henderson

Dear Parent(s) of Student,

I would like to start off by saying how privileged I am to have your son in class and I
look forward to the potential he hold. Although lately it has come to my attention that your son
has not been consistently following the safety rules for Lacrosse. He has come very close to
hitting other students in the face with his Lacrosse stick. This has been occurring even though we
discuss the safety rules daily. Initially, I gave him a verbal warning. However, I had to sit him out
of the game because he continued to break the rules. I strongly believe every student should be
treated respectfully and equally. Our school policy requires the parent and teacher meet to
discuss what is best for the student. We will also need to discuss if and when the school
counselor should be involved. From that point, if the rules and expectations cannot be fulfilled
then for the safety of the other students he will need to sit out indefinitely and lose all points.
I am thankful that your student is in my class, because he provides an example of
leadership to his peers during our warm-up and fitness activities. I am willing to do whatever it
takes to make sure your son gets the proper education. Prior to these behavior issues, he was
earning an A. However, because he had to sit out a game, he lost some points on behavior and
participation. Please feel free to email me back at your earliest convenience and I hope to meet
with you soon.
Sincerely,

Mr. Henderson

Professional Growth Plan

I want to make my first year of teaching the most influential year of my career. I feel that
walking into my new school for first day can make or break the impression I not only give the
children, but the school itself. As a Physical Education teacher, I am a role model. I can take the
good days and make them better, or the bad days and turn them completely around. Children
who enter my class will not only feel like they are at home, but they will also be able to talk to
me and know that I care about their backgrounds and lifestyle. My ultimate goal for the first year
of teaching is to make sure I set the tone early, because the rest of my career could reflect upon
it.
Long term goals are where I plan to have my career in check and to be able to have my
name up in lights, meaning I want to be the star teacher in terms of respect, diligence, and
consistency. When it comes to my goals for this time frame, I want to work on my Masters
degree, because this can change your career immensely, not only from the financial aspect, but
the notoriety as well. One of my favorite teachers that I have looked up to is my elementary
teacher I had last semester. I have a lot of respect for him because he has been in the game for
over 10 years and he values his job. Regardless of where he has traveled or what grade he has

taught, his teaching technique is flawless. I want to follow in his footsteps and build a reputation
for myself as a good PE teacher. In terms of the organizations I want to immerse myself in, I
want to be a member of the Arizona Health and Physical Education Department and I want to
attend conferences like the Active and Healthy Kids movement that can make me a better teacher
such as the Active and Healthy Kids movement. Conferences are a vital part of a Physical
Education career, but most importantly I want to make sure I help the community; for the parents
who devote their time to giving their children the opportunity to learn from me.
At the beginning of the school year, I want to incorporate an academic night for the
parents to see the classroom and the equipment that we supply the children during class. As the
school year progresses, I want to get the parents involved so that they can see what the
curriculum looks like and how important Physical Education is to their childs academics and
health. I will always have an open email policy for parents so they can see how their child is
performing and be involved in upcoming events. Anything I can do to help my students succeed
will be done to the best of my ability. Teaching to me is more than a goal; its a lifelong decision.
Whether this is starting a workout program or eating healthy, this is a commitment. I will make
sure that I give this everything I have to change lives and help my students achieve their goals as
well.
