Description of Internship Placement
Howard County Maryland is a suburban community located south
of Baltimore. In 2013 Howard County had a population of over 300,000
residents. The Howard County School System currently operates 76
schools: 41 elementary schools, 20 middle schools, 12 high schools,
and 3 special/education centers. The school system currently has over
52,000 students, 4670 teachers, 3259 staff, and has a student to
teacher ratio of 14.3. The school has done well athletically; it has 13
regional titles, 8 state titles, and 5 county titles. Academically, the
school holds 8 Maryland DECA State Championships.
Since 2007 I have been working as a Special Education teacher
at a high school in Fulton Maryland. The schools official capacity is
1,551 students. The racial makeup of the school is 51.7% White, 28%
Black, 10.7% Asian, 8.6% Hispanic, and 0.3% Native American. The
school has a 7.2% special education population. The school serves
students with a wide range of disabilities such as Autism, Intellectual
Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disabilities, and Multiple
Disabilities. The school has a high graduation rate of 94.2%. Of the
2015 graduating class 62.1% attended a 4-year college, 28.5%
attended a 2-year college, and less than 5% attended a specialized
school for training, or entered the military.

While completing this internship placement, I worked as a Special

Education Teacher in the Enclave Program. The Enclave Program is a
supervised work-training placement for students receiving special
education. This program provides a transition step between school and
independent work for those who need a higher degree of support or
supervision. The experience enables students to achieve success in a
community vocational setting while learning the attitudes and skills
necessary to work independently. I currently serve six students, 4
males and 2 females. Their range of disabilities includes intellectual
disabilities and autism. The areas affected by their disability include
reading comprehension, study/organizational skills, math, written
expression, social/pragmatics, transition, expressive/receptive
language, and adaptive skills. While completing this internship my
schedule included an inclusion Modern World History class and 4
periods of the Enclave Program.
