Lesson Title: Kindergarten Monoprints
Time Frame: 3-4 classes

Sequence Theme/ Big Idea:
Exploring and using elements of art and principles of design class artwork.

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Lesson Narrative:
The word mono means one, so the word monoprint means one print.
Monoprinting is a type of printmaking process where you make one design and you
can print it only once. This means its one of a kind piece of art. Different kinds of
lines are used to make up the individually unique design

Lesson Rational:
This lesson introduces students to the printmaking process of monoprinting. This
form of printmaking utilizes the use of lines to create shape, which can only be made
once unlike other forms of printmaking where there are multiple originals in a
series. Monoprinting is the gateway into more complex printing processes. It
practices drawing skills while adding a new element of originality.

Key Concepts:
Monoprints are meant to only be printed one time
Monoprinting is a type of printmaking process
Lines can be used to make unique designs and create different shapes

Objectives:
Students will have a better understanding of what the term monoprint
means.
Students will also be able to use a brayer to properly roll out printing ink on
their Plexiglas printing plate.
Students will use their understanding of line and basic shapes to draw a
design on their inked Plexiglas printing plate

Standards:
Indiana Standards

K.6.3 Use personal symbols to express ideas.

K.7.2 Discriminate between types of lines (characteristics), shapes (geometric),

textures (tactile), and colors (primary/secondary hues) in own work and the work
of others.

K.6.4 Demonstrate thoughtfulness and care in creating artwork

Ohio Standards

5PE Identify and name materials used in visual art.

4PR Reduce objects into basic shapes and lines in relation to the whole image.

2RE Show confidence and pride in their artistic accomplishments

Materials:
Red and Pink Speedball printing ink (2 tubes each color)
Speedball Brayers (8)
Plexiglas printing plates (6)
Q-Tips (100)
10x15 white paper (25 sheets)
Scissors
Red, Purple, Pink construction paper
Glue sticks
Heart patterns (25)

Lesson Vocabulary:
Brayer roller used to distribute ink on printing plate
Monoprint a drawing that can only be printed one time
Line a dot that went for a walk

Historical/Multicultural Exemplars:
Monoprinting has been used by many artists, for example Georg Baselitz and Tracey
Emin. Some old master prints, like etchings by Rembrandt with individual
manipulation of ink as "surface tone", or hand-painted etchings by Degas (usually
called monotypes) might be classifiable as monoprints.

Visual Culture Component:
Students will apply what theyve learned about lines to create a design for their
monoprint. Guided by the visual poster aid and the lines they practiced making

before printing, they will create a piece that has consideration and some form of
planning.

Procedure:

Hook: I will go each classroom and present a short presentation about the
project and show them a cute video about different kinds of line.

Dialogue:
Day 1: Introduction and Planning
For the first day I will go to the classroom and present a short slide presentation
explaining the project. Attached, will be a short video the students will watch to get
them thinking about different types of lines they could use in their drawings. Once
the presentation is finished, the students will line up and walk with me down to the
art classroom (cafeteria) and begin sketch drawings using different kinds of lines. A
line poster will be displayed as a visual aid for the students to refer to.
Day 2: Printing
For this day students will come straight to the art classroom to begin printing their
monoprints. Students will take a seat at the three front tables in the cafeteria. I will
then quiet them and introduce what well be doing today. I will start by asking them
if they remember what the term monoprint means. I will then ask them to name
different kinds of lines. I will then move on to the demonstration portion of the class
introduction. I will show them the proper technique of using the brayer to roll out
the printing ink. I will show them the technique of drawing lines in the ink and how
to press the paper and print your monoprint image. Lastly, I will tell them that I will
call 6 students up at a time to come print and instruct that the students not printing
will color using the blank coloring pages.

Day 3: Printing
This is another workday devoted to printing; this is for students who didnt get the
chance to print on the first printing day. Students who are not printing will work on
coloring pages. All printing will be finished on this workday.

Day 4: Paper Hearts
When students arrive and are quietly seated I will introduce the next step to the
monoprinting project. I will demo how to cut out and trace the heart onto the
colored paper and attach it to their monoprint paper using a glue stick. These are all
skills they have practiced before so they should be familiar with them. They must
trace and cut out 3 sizes of hearts on the pink, purple, and red construction paper
and glue them to their monoprint page. I will also instruction them to throw away
all scrap paper in the recycling when they are finished. Once students have
completed all these tasks they may choose a coloring page and work on it for any of
the remaining time.

Sketchbook/Artist Motivation:

Students will practice drawing different types of line on white drawing paper using
pencil and crayon before proceeding onto printing. This will be good practice to get
them thinking about different lines they could use in their final design.

Closure:
Students will clean up their tables and wait to be dismissed by table.

Adaptations/ Special Modifications:
For special and exceptional learners I will adjust the assignment based on their
specific needs. Prior to the lesson I will identify which students might need/benefit
from any special accommodations, and speak to their paraprofessional about their
abilities. It is my goal to have all my students participate in the lesson and create a
final piece.
