Couch, David. The Elderly In Nursing Homes Are Vulnerable To Abuse. n.p.: Gale,
Cengage Learning, 2011. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The book The Elderly in Nursing Homes Are Vulnerable to Abuse shows that some
nursing homes value money over the quality of service they serve to the residence. Most nursing
homes are for profit and over half of those are chains. The government has regulations set in
place, but some nursing homes still have serious problems. The biggest problem is low staff.
Nursing homes can either cut how many residence or how many nurses they have. Those that cut
the nurses give poor quality service towards the residence. Nursing homes say they dont have
enough money even though the government gives them money and the profit margins in nursing
homes are healthy. In the end some cut staff and harm is caused to residence. The book is
relevant to my research because the book illustrates that nursing home value making money over
the care of the residence.

Haley, John, and Wendy Stein. The Truth about Abuse. New York: Facts On File, 2005.
Print.
The book "Truth about Abuse" talks about abuse of many types of people. One sections
talks about the abuse of the elderly. The elderly are vulnerable to physical abuse, emotional
abuse, financial exploitation, sexual abuse, and neglect. The book shows people how to know the
signs of abuse in the elderly. The abuse of the elderly is not only in the care of family but also in
the care of a nursing home. Nursing homes are not the safest place. The book shows that nursing
homes house all of these problems. Reports show those nursing homes were cited with physical,
sexual, and verbal abuse. The book is relevant to my research because it shows that nursing
homes deal with verbal abuse towards their patients.

"How Patient Trust Accounts at Nursing Homes Are Open to Abuse. Globe & Mail (Toronto,
Canada) 2015: Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The article How Patient Trust Accounts at Nursing Homes Are Open to Abuse shows a
nursing home was breaking trust account regulations. The nursing home could not pay its
payroll; therefore, they took money from the trust accounts of the residents at the nursing home.
The money was put back, but the nursing home was breaking trust account regulations. They
broke the regulations that said the trust accounts are to be audited annually, and one that stops
nursing homes from charging service fees. This nursing home is not the only one that broke
regulations. The nursing home was punished and the advisory body kicked out the guy who
approved the transfer. Between seven nursing homes 19 complaints were filed. The article is
relevant to my research because it demonstrates an example of financial abuse in nursing homes.

Ruppe, David "Elderly Abused at 1 in 3 Nursing Homes: Report." ABC News. ABC News
Network. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The article Elderly Abused at 1 in 3 Nursing Homes: Report shows that nursing homes
have been reported for serious types of abuse. The report found that many nursing homes were
cited for abuse. Some of those violations were serious to cause harm or death. The government
put standard in place to protect the residence from abuse, but they need more work to protect the
residences. In another report nursing homes failed to meet federal health and safety standards. In
one incident ants were crawling all over an elderly lady. The article is relevant to my research
because it supports that physical abuse in nursing homes is present.

a nursing home who was abuse. The son of the patient, Dale, saw bruises on his dad, but his dad
has Alzheimers and therefore cannot tell Dale where the bruises originated. Dale decided to put
a hidden camera in his dads room to see if anyone was being mean to him. The son found two
nursing that was supposed to be taking care of him beating him. They slapped, kicked, restrained,
and pretended to punch him to try to make him mad. The nurses also held the elderly man down
and made him punch himself in the face with his own hands. The son could not believe what he
saw. The two nurses are charged with battery. The article is relevant to my research because it
shows an example of an elderly person being physically abused in a nursing home.

The article Verbal Abuse in Nursing Homes talks about how elderly are verbal abuse in
nursing homes. Verbal abuse is the most common forms of emotional abuse in nursing homes.
Some common types of verbal abuse are yelling, rude remarks, and threats. The cause of verbal
abuse is due to frustration and impatience. Verbal abuse affects the patient in many ways. They
may be withdrawn from socialization, hesitance to speak, or avoidance of eye contact. To prevent
verbal abuse the patient needs to be visited by family often for nurses will be less likely to do it if
watched. The article is relevant to my research because it will demonstrate the different types of
verbal abuse the elderly experience in nursing homes.
