Artifact: Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning
Date of Completion: February 15, 2016
Course Completed in: EDUC 230 01 Education Field Experience
Rationale Statement:
This artifact reflects my personal experiences, thoughts and goals for my future
classroom, and my own teaching pedagogy. I had to create a plan that aims to put the above reflections
into action known as my Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning. I was able to create a
philosophy that involved two of the five Teaching Philosophies found in the Foundations of Education
textbook, TEACH2 by Janice Koch. With a combination of Essentialism and Perennialism I will be able
to present material to my students and then actively engage them in inquisitive thought and discussion
by using videos, art and other outside sources. This directly connects to the Critical Dispositions 1.2 and
1.3 because teachers must be able to recognize what the students already know about a topic and what
they are still confused about to create a well rounded presentation of material. They must also take
responsibility for promoting their studentss growth and development as learners. This can be done
through critical thinking and open discussions.

Reents 2
I can honestly say that writing my Personal Philosophy made my heart race. I am genuinely even
more excited to get into a classroom and start teaching and engaging students. I was able to look back
and learn about what made my education a success and the various teaching methods and philosophies I
learned in Foundations of Education. I learned to critically think about which methods were best tailored
to the subject I aim to teach. I realized how important it is to use my knowledge as the groundwork for a
lesson and how equally important it is to get a students input.
I am seeing different methods work and not work during my current clinical practice. I can
already guess at what my cooperating teachers personal philosophy consists of. That above all else
shows me how important it is to have one. If I am able to understand what makes her tick as an
educator and watch it come alive in her classrooms marks her as a great teacher. That is what I hope to
do and be. I hope to use my recently created philosophy as the groundwork for my career. I aim to look
back at it, be inspired by it and even tweak it as time goes on. As stated in my artifact; I have an affinity
for learning and becoming a teacher does not mean I stop learning or growing.
