1. What is the students thesis? Is it clear and specific? (If you cannot identify the
thesis, give the writer some ideas as to how to make thesis clearer.)

2. Does the author have at least 4 pieces of textual evidence? Do all pieces of
evidence support the claims made (thesis)? Are quotations cited according to MLA
formatting? (If not, write down problems here.)

3. Does each body paragraph have a clear topic sentence? And, does each body
paragraph contain clear commentary that ties to the topic sentence and thesis?
Does each body paragraph contain a transition sentence? If not, give the writer
some ideas for how to improve.

4. Does the essay have a concluding paragraph that has a SO WHAT? (Why does
what you said matter? What does it teach us about life/human nature?) Does it
have a strong concluding statement?

5. What was your favorite part of this essay? How could the writer build on it?

6. If you could change one part of this essay, what would you change? Why?

7. Are there parts of the essay that are unclear? If so, conference with the writer or
write some ideas here.
