NC Licensure Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC


Education Requirements:

54 Semester Hours or 81 Quarter Hours

Clinical Supervision Training shall provide an understanding of the purposes, theoretical


frameworks, and models of clinical supervision as well as the roles and relationships related to
clinical supervision; shall include legal, ethical, and multicultural issues associated with clinical
supervision.

Three (3) semester graduate credits from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
documented on official transcript in 9 areas of study:

Examination Requirements:

National Exam
o National Counselor Exam (NCE) provided by the National Board for Certified
Counselors
o National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE) provided by the
National Board for Certified Counselors
o Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Exam (CRC) provided by the Commission on
Rehabilitation Counselor Certification
Jurisprudence Exam (Effective July 1, 2011)
o No Fail
o Certificate of completion must accompany application/renewal
o Covers the law and ethical codes that govern the LPC

Supervised Professional Practice:


3000 hours supervised professional practice accrued with a qualified clinical supervisor who was Board
approved for the applicant prior to October 1, 2009

2000 hours must be direct counseling

No hours applied from Master Level Practicum/Internship

Not less than 8 hours per week but no more than 40 hours per week.

100 hours clinical supervision

Must have a minimum of 1 hour clinical supervision for every 40 hours of professional
practice
Supervision shall be based on direct (live) observation, co-therapy, audio and video
recordings, and live supervision
At least three-quarters of the hours of clinical supervision shall be individual

Professional Disclosure Statement:


Includes the following information

Name of licensee
The licensees highest relevant degree, discipline of the degree, year degree received, and name
of institution granting the degree.
Names and numbers of all relevant credentials (licenses, certificates, registrations).
LPCA License and number
A license applicant should include a statement indicating that he/she is pursuing licensure as a
Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina and that they are under board approved
supervision.
Number of years of counseling experience.
Description of clientele (populations) served.
Description of services offered (include a brief description of theoretical orientation and types of
techniques used).
Length of sessions
Specific fee charged for each type of session. If a sliding scale is used, it must be included in full
with a blank for the agreed upon fee. If no fee is charged, this must be stated.
Methods of payment accepted (cash, check, credit card, etc.) and information about billing and
insurance reimbursement.
A brief statement regarding the use of diagnosis and the fact that this becomes a permanent part
of the clients records.
An explanation of confidentiality, including responsibilities and exceptions (harm to self and
others, indication of child or elder abuse, court order a subpoena is not a court order).
Statement of procedures for registering complaints, including the full name, the address and
phone number of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.
Signature and date spaces for both the client and the license

Licensed Professional School Counselor


Exam Requirements:

Praxis II: 5421: Professional School Counselor (passing score = 156)
