Show, Not Tell

Lauren Tashis is a good writer because she uses a lot of descriptions to help you see what
is happening. She uses a lot of similes. Another thing she does is showing and not telling.
For example, in Chapter 2, she wrote that Leo would rather sell his heart than his gold
nugget (p. 6). She didnt tell you that Leo loves his gold nugget, but you knew, didnt
you?
Again, in Chapter 3, Lauren wrote that Wilkie weighed almost 300 pounds, with smooth
chubby cheeks (p. 10). Did she say that he was fat? No, but you knew by her description.
Finally, on p. 11-13, you know that Fletch and Wilkie are bullies by their actions. They beat
Leo up, took his money and gold, and threw him in the garbage. The amazing thing is that
Lauren never said the boys were bullies!
This is called showing, not telling. You can tell someone something, but its not as
awesome as when you show them, right?

On p. 18, what shows that Morris cares about Leo?

____Morris was looking everywhere for Leo. When he found him, he wiped the caked blood
from Leos face.________________________________________________________________

On p. 21, what shows that Leo is not rich? ___He used a flea-bitten horse blanket for a
bed.________________________________________________________________________
