Instructions: Solve the following problems with a partner. Write the solution clearly and box your final
answer. Any act of dishonesty such as cheating shall be subjected to disciplinary actions.
1. Bucket and pulley (8 points)
A 15.0-kg bucket of water is suspended by a very light rope wrapped around a solid uniform cylinder
0.300 m in diameter with mass 12.0 kg. The cylinder pivots on a frictionless axle through its center. The
bucket is released from rest at the top of a well and falls 10.0 m to the water. The moment of inertia of
1
cylinder is I = mR2
2
Draw free body diagram of the bucket and the cylinder. Indicate the direction of acceleration and
the direction of rotation of cylinder (2 pts)

What is the acceleration of the bucket. You can solve this by using Newtons second law of motion
for translational and rotational motion. (4 pt)

What is the tension produced by the rope while the bucket is falling. (2 pt)

2. Akyat at baba(8 points)

slip on the pulley rim and the 4.00 kg mass is allowed to fall while the 2.00 kg mass rises.
The pulley (I =

What is the initial total energy of the system? (before the masses are allowed to move) (1 pt).

What is the speed of the block just before it hits the ground? Solve this by obtaining the total energy
of the system just before the block hits the ground. (4 pts)

What is the speed of the block just before it hits the ground if the pulley is massless? (3 pts).

3. Transformer!(4 points) Iko-tron is a robot that can transform from a disk (Idisk =

mR2
) of radius R to a

) of length 4R. In an outer space battle, Iko-tron spins in his disk form with an angular
12
speed of disk . He then transforms himself into a rod (see the extraordinary figure below), giving him a
new angular speed of rod .
rod (Irod =

What is the ratio of disk to that of rod ? (2 pts)

Assuming that disk = 10.0 rad /s, what will be the numerical value of rod if Ikot-ron transforms
himself to a rod of length 2R? (2 pts)
