2.1Background
Channelelement(CE)resourcesareatypeofNodeBresources.ThenumberofCEssupportedbyaNodeBisdeterminedbythe
capabilitiesofitsbasebandboards.DownlinkCEsareusedforencoding,spreading,andmodulation.UplinkCEsareusedfor
demodulationanddecoding.
CEresourcesarecrucialforHSUPAUEswitha2mstransmissiontimeinterval(TTI)toexperiencehighratesandshortservice
delays.AnHSUPAUEwitha2msTTIconsumesmuchmoreuplinkCEresourcesthananHSUPAUEwitha10msTTI.IfCE
resourcesareinsufficient,HSUPAUEswitha2msTTIcannotaccessthenetworkunlesstheyusea10msTTI.
CEresourceusageissomewhatlowonlivenetworks.Thisisbecausethetrafficmodelhasbeenchangedasaresultofthe
increasinglyhighpenetrationrateofsmartphonesandtherebyanincreasednumberofonlineHSUPAusers.Althoughthedatarateof
theseusersislow(ataround20kbit/s),theystillconsumeaconsiderableamountofCEresources.
ToimproveCEefficiencyandadapttotherealityoftoday'strafficmodels,HuaweiintroducestheWRFD160205CEEfficiency
ImprovementforHSUPATTI2msfeature.

2.2Introduction
ThisfeatureimprovesCEefficiencyforHSUPAUEswitha2msTTI.Withthisfeature,anHSUPAUEconsumesaminimumofone
CEtokeeponlineandtransmitdataataminimumuplinkrateof20kbit/s.

2.3Benefits
ThisfeatureprovidesthefollowingbenefitswhenCEresourcesareinsufficient:

TechnicalDescription

3.1Principles

WithCEEfficiencyImprovementforHSUPATTI2ms,anHSUPAUEwitha2msTTIusesasingleHARQprocesstotransmitone
RLCPDUwithadefaultsizeof40bytesineachTTI.Toimplementthis,theNodeBsendsanabsolutegrant(AG)messageto
deactivatetheothersevenHARQprocesses.

3.2FeatureImpacts
CEEfficiencyImprovementforHSUPATTI2msaffectsdynamicCEschedulingandCEadmissionalgorithmasfollows:
IndynamicCEscheduling,theschedulercanconfigureHSUPAUEswitha2msTTItouseasingleHARQprocessto
transmitoneRLCPDUineachTTIwhenuplinkdataraterequiredbytheUEsis20kbit/sorlower,therebyreducingCE
consumption.
EachHSUPAUEwitha2msTTIconsumesonlyoneadmissionCE.

3.2.1 Dynamic CE Resource Management


ThedynamicCEalgorithmallocatesCEresourcestoeachHSUPAUEbasedonavailableCEresources,UE'sdatatransmission
requirements,anduserdifferentiation.WhenCEresourcesaresufficient,moreCEsareallocatedtoUEsthatrequirerateupgrade.If
CEresourcesbecomeinsufficient,aratedowngradeisperformed.ToensurethataUEisonline,thedowngradedratemustnotbe
lowerthan160kbit/s,whichistheminimumrequirementwhenaUEusesalltheeightactiveHARQprocessestotransmitoneRLC
PDU.WhenCEEfficiencyImprovementforHSUPATTI2msisenabled,theminimumrateofanHSUPAUEwitha2msTTIattheRLC
layercanbereducedfrom160kbit/sto20kbit/s,assuchaUEcanuseasingleHARQprocesstotransmitoneRLCPDUineach
TTI.
CEEfficiencyImprovementforHSUPATTI2msalsoincreasesthedifferentiationbetweenhighpriorityandlowpriorityUEswhenCE
resourcesareinsufficient.HighpriorityHSUPAUEswitha2msTTIcanenjoyamaximumrateof5.44Mbit/sattheRLClayer.
Therefore,theratedifferentiationratiobetweenhighpriorityandlowpriorityUEsisincreasedfrom34:1(5440:160)to272:1(5440/20).

2msisenabled.Aftertheswitchisenabled,theNodeBsendsaschedulinggranttoallnewlyadmittedHSUPAUEswitha2msTTIso
thattheyuseasingleHARQprocesstotransmitoneRLCPDUineachTTIat20kbit/s.WhenCEresourcesaresufficient,theNodeB
allowsUEsthatrequirehigherdataratestousealltheeightHARQprocessestotransmitdata.TheNodeBlearnsthataUErequires
higherdataratewhenthehappybitoftheUEtransmittedontheEDCHDedicatedPhysicalControlChannel(EDPCCH)is"unhappy"
andthevalueofTotalEDCHBufferStatus(TEBS)inSegmentationIndication(SI)fieldislargerthanorequalto20kbit/s.TheUEthen
usesalltheeightHARQprocessestotransmitdataeventhoughitnolongerrequiressuchahighrate.ThissituationlastsuntiltheCE
resourcesbecomeinsufficientandtheNodeBinstructstheUEtouseasingleHARQprocesstotransmitthedata.
ThisinitialsingleHARQfunctionisrecommendedforNodeBswithinsufficientCEresourcesandalargenumberofUEsthatrequirea
lowdatarate(20kbit/s).UsingthisfunctionrestrictstheinstantaneousrateofUEsandthereforeincreasestheuplinkdelay.
IftheSrbChlTypeRrcEffectFlag(BSC6900,BSC6910)parameterissettoTRUE,theSRBoverEDCHswitchtakeseffectduringan
RRCconnectionestablishmentandtheinitialsingleHARQfunctiondoesnottakeeffectduringaRABsetup.

3.2.2 Admission CE Consumption for HSUPA UEs with a 2 ms TTI

NodeBinformstheRNCthattheseUEsdonotsupportadmissionCEbasedorCEconsumptionbasedTTIadjustments
usingtheprivatefieldsintheRLSetupResponse,RLReconfigurationResponseReady,orRLAddResponsemessages.
For2msTTIHSUPAUEswithserviceestablishedonotherboards,admissionCEconsumptioniscalculatedbasedonthe

withtheDTXfunction.IftheparametersconfiguredforCPCUEsdonotmeetcertainconditions,theUTRANwill
automaticallyidentifyCPCUEs,andconfigurecycle1as8andcycle2as16.ThisfunctionisintroducedinRNCrunning
R16SPC630andNodeBrunningR16SPC180,beforewhenCPCUEsdonotsupportthesingleHARQfunction.

IfyouenableHSUPAUEswitha2msTTIrequiringalowdataratetouseasingleHARQprocessfromthebeginningto
transmitdatainacellloadednormally,UEswithdatatransferrequirementscanusemoreCEresources,whichincreases
theuplinkthroughput.TheincreasedthroughputdependsonthenumberofHSUPAUEswitha2msTTIrequiringalow
datarateandthenumberofsuchUEsthatuseasingleHARQprocesstotransmitdata.

NetworkPerformance
WhencomparedwithCEOverbooking,thisfeaturefurtherdecreasestheamountofadmissionCEresourcesconsumedbyHSUPA
UEswitha2msTTIsincetheyonlyuseoneadmissionCE.TheadmissionCEconsumptionforsuchUEscannowbeprecisely
evaluatedbasedonthenumberofUEsonthelivenetwork.WithCEOverbooking,admissionCEconsumptionforUEswitha10ms
TTIcanbepreciselyevaluatedbasedontheraterequiredfortransmittingoneRLCPDU.CEresourcesforR99UEsareassignedand
consumedinafixedmanner.
IftheuplinkCEresourcesareinsufficientandadmissionCEbaseddynamicTTIadjustmentisnotenabled,thisfeatureallowsmore
UEstobeadmitted,increasingthecellaccesssuccessrate.
WhenthisfeatureisenabledtogetherwithadmissionCEbasedandCEconsumptionbaseddynamicTTIadjustment,ifCEresources
becomeinsufficient,2msto10msTTIswitchingisnotperformedonHSUPAUEswitha2msTTI.Asaresult,asinglecellserves
moreHSUPAUEswith2msTTIsandthenumberoftimesTTIswitchingistriggereddecreases.
Whenthisfeatureisenabled,thenumberoftimesHSUPAUEsexperienceservicedropsduetopoorcoveragemayincreasebecause
a2msTTIprovidesweakercoveragethana10msTTI.YouareadvisedtoenablecoveragebaseddynamicTTIadjustmenttoprevent
thissituationfromoccurring.
WhencomparedwithanHSUPAUEwitha2msTTIthatusesalltheeightHARQprocessestotransmitdata,anHSUPAUEwitha2
