Second Grade Lesson Plan
Materials:
Lesson
Objective:

Good Note for classroom teacher, sticker to use toward Class Party Day,
Mallet, dry erase marker, rhythm cards, Theo and the Blue Note book.

Students will be able to differentiate between beat and rhythm and learn about ties in relation
to half notes and how to count those rhythmically in context. They will also participate in a
movement activity, singing, and listen attentively to a story that relates to the lesson content.
Opener:

Greet Students in hallway for briefing.


a Hello 2nd graders, today we will be learning a new song, were going to play a
game, and were going to hear a new story.
b Sing Here we Are.
c Hold the door, and have them enter one line at a time when they hear the music

begin.
Students enter quietly, and get seated in assigned seats.

Anticipatory Set:
1 Explain the rules for the instrument for the Rules Song (Congas)
a Pat a steady beat with four fingers on one of the drums while you pat on the other.
2 Go through Rules Song Sequence.
3 State Objectives of the day.
a Play a game with our new song.
b Read a story.

Bring students to carpet.


Warm up our ears.
a Echo clap.
b Cards with Tas Tay Tays, half notes, and rests.
What types of notes were we using with our echo clapping?
a Tas, Tay Tays, half notes, and Rests.
b Review half notes and how to count them.
Clap and say the rhythms using the rhythm cards go through each one.
a 1-2 clap and.
b Stop on repeat sign, ask who remembers it.

Lets sing our new song.


Sing through Great, Big House once.
a Falsetto.
Second time through, This time listen and tell me how many stories tall our house
was.
a 40.
Third time, This time listen and tell me what the rooms were filled with.
a Pumpkin pie.
Echo Sing, one line at a time.
a Point at yourself when its your turn, point at them when its their team.
After you sang through one line at a time, then the whole thing.
a Explain that you will sing longer phrases before they sing.

Signal students to circle up.


Play the Pie game.
a. Circle up, have one person in the middle.
b. Clap, shake, join hands,
c. Person in the middle cuts the pie.
d. At the end of the song: 2 people run around the circle, shake hands, pass each
other and first back is in the middle.
e. Do this 3 times.

Signal students to make lines and sit on the black lines.


a Remind them to do so quietly.

Have students pat beat.


a Beat is steady like your heartbeat.
b Sing through, while students pat and sing.
Do this again, but draw the beats on the board.
a Sing again to Check the beats while tapping along.
Call volunteer.
a Give them mallet and help them tap on the beat if necessary.
Do this three times, girls pick boys and vice versa.
a Choose a friend, Charlie, choose a friend right now.
We are NOT doing beat anymore, we are doing rhythm.
a Beat is in lap, we clap the rhythm.
b Clap with rhythm twice.
c Remind them about the ties.
How many sounds are on each beat?
a Teacher taps on beat second sing through.
Choose volunteer to fix the rhythm.
Explain the tie and remind them that we can now make it into a half note.
a Two beats. Tie it together.
b Pull it tight, thats how we count it.
c Draw half note.
Choose four students to fix four lines.
a Help by clapping rhythm and singing for them if they get stuck.

Since we just sang a song about a great big house in New Orleans, who can make a
prediction about what our book will be about? What kind of music is in New

Remind them of good listening posture.
Go through book, showing pictures.
Take comments on what they liked about the story.

Closer:

a Half note.
