Graphing Coordinates UBD Lesson Plan

Grade Level: SDC, 3-6

Subject: Math

Title: Graph Coordinates

Time Frame: 30 Minutes

Objective(s):
Students will know and be able to

Communicate where items are on a graph.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will understand how to use a graph and locate information on it.
Students will gain experience in working with graphs and be able to transfer that knowledge and understanding to multiplication
charts.

Standards:
Geometry 5.G - Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the
origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers,
called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis,
and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the
two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

Rationale:
This lesson is designed to not only introduce a 5th grade standard to students, but allow them to work with graphs in a
manner that will assist them in understanding how to read a multiplication chart.

Intelligences Addressed in Unit:

Differentiation for to meet student needs and levels of understandings:

Purple group generally needs more attention. They will work with IA to complete their graph.
Teacher will monitor students and reteach/model as needed.

Materials:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Graphs made with stickers for teaching and student practice.

Flex cam, projector
dry erase markers
iPhone or iPad with Rick Morris app called Student Cards
copies of Kagan Cartesian graph activity

Lesson Plan
Whole Group Setting 20 minutes
1. Teacher use flex cam to share Cartesian graph with stickers.
2. Teacher will introduce vocabulary of Cartesian graph, x axis, y axis, and coordinates
3. Teacher will model how to find and write coordinate for one of the stickers.
4. Students will share answers for each of the remaining stickers, calling student by Student Cards app.
5. Teacher will break remaining students into small groups, give them a graph, and a dry erase marker.
6. Students will find coordinates for the stickers on their graphs using a Round Robin cooperative learning structure.
7. Students will take turns stating what they think it is, partners will agree or disagree and coach, the student will write their
answer when others agree.
8. teacher will monitor student groups and clarify as needed.
9. When all coordinates are written, group will raise their hand to have teacher or IA check their work.
Small Group Setting 20 minutes
1. Teacher will have already taught whole group.
2. Teacher will review concept with students.
3. Students will work with a partner to complete a paper version of the cartesian graph.
4. Teacher will monitor student progress and offer clarrification as needed.
