Should Teachers be Able to Have a Concealed Carry during School?

"Arming Teachers, Protecting Students." Insights On Law & Society 14.1 (2013): 30.
Education

Full Text (H.W. Wilson). Web. 28 Jan. 2016.

The author and several South Dakota Legislators discuss a bill that would
essentially allow teachers and school staff to carry concealed weapons, protecting
the students on school property. They also discuss a study from 1999, which found
that mass shootings usually occur in places where firearms are prohibited. I find it
interesting that the author used plenty of facts from the actual situations of past
school shootings. I also really enjoyed the way that the author also talked about the
restrictions that would be in place if this law was enforced. The audience that this
article is geared towards is definitely the general public. The article could also be
geared towards the specific communities affected by this bill, and the parents who
are worried for their kids safety.

Taylor, Kelley R. "Should Teachers Carry Guns?." Principal Leadership: Middle Level
Edition 8.8
(2008): 60-62. Education Full Text (H.W. Wilson). Web. 28 Jan. 2016.

There are many crucial social questions that revolve around whether
teachers, and school staff should be allowed to carry a gun on school property.
There are many opinions on this debate, and the information is provided very well.
This article definitely expands on all of those social questions involved in this
specific topic. It also accents the various conditions that need to be met in this
situation. The author lays out the facts very informatively, and straightforward. I
love how this article is organized as well. This makes it so much easier to go back
and find the information that I need for my argument. The Where You Fit In section
also helps us see who the audience is. They are talking to the people of the
community, and what this issue should mean to them as a whole.

concealed weapons in
two rural school districts in south central missouri." Dissertation Abstracts

Section A 76. (2015). PsycINFO. Web. 8 Feb. 2016.

In this Article I really enjoyed the way that the author explains how real this
issue is and how it can affect all of the people involved in the school and the nearby
community. It explains the perceptions of the changes that would be made if
teachers and staff were able to participate in the concealed carry, and the ways
they would be trained to help protect their students. This study also includes the
results from a questionnaire sent to the staffs of two schools. I love that it actually
shows the evidence, and ways that actual people are responding. This makes it
much more personal, and it seems like they are showing the responders true
feelings towards the situation.

Donohue, Elizabeth, et al. "School House Hype: School Shootings And The Real Risks
Kids Face
In America. Policy Report." (1998): ERIC. Web. 8 Feb. 2016.

This report discusses the risks that children face in today's American schools.
They also discuss the growing violence rates, and shootings in schools throughout
the country. They also go in depth about what is said to of caused these events and
how the school systems are adapting. They also claim that the violence is not part
of a trend and the likelihood of someone being involved in a school shooting is
somewhere around 1 in a million. They also recommend ways to decrease these
growing rates of violence in today's children.

Campus Shootings Raise Safety Concerns." USA Today 2 October 2015.
Document.

In this article the author discusses the recent campus shootings, and how
they have effected those areas. They also include quotes from the people of the
towns affected. These quotes make the article a lot more personal. This article is
also written in a pretty informal way, because it is in a magazine, not in a scholarly
source. The articles audience is very broad, and it reaches out to anyone interested.
I think the author was mostly trying to reach the people of those areas affected, and
to try and educate everyone else on how many shootings have occurred recently. I
found this article very interesting because it discusses more than one situation. I
also enjoyed the fact that the author used quotes that made it more personal.

Kaminski, Robert J., et al. "The Impacts Of The Virginia Tech And Northern Illinois
University Shootings On Fear Of Crime On Campus." Journal Of Criminal
Justice 38.(2010): 88-98. ScienceDirect. Web. 24 Mar. 2016.
This Article clearly discusses the impact of fear on the towns affected by the
recent shootings. They also discussed a new study that surveyed students and their
levels of fear. They concluded that the shootings were associated to modest
increases in fear, and they also varied on characteristics like the students age, sex,
and race. The evidence used to support this study was the numerous statistical
values and graphs shown. They even looked at multiple types of factors that would
have contributed to the shootings, and the increase in fear. The audience could be
anyone, but mostly the types of people that were affected. They definitely used an
educational standpoint, and had a lot of support for the facts and ideas stated. I
think that the people that would be most interested would be the college students
around the world, and the ones affected.
