Term Project 6: Reflection

The skittles project we were assigned to do this semester has taught me a lot about
statistics and how we can apply it in the real world. It was interesting to see how we could use
the material we were learning in almost every section to analyze the data we collected
individually and as a class. I feel like this project helped me to better understand what we were
being taught, because I was able to apply it to a real example from data that I helped collect
rather than just an example given in the textbook.
The most interesting part about this project was how we could take data from one bag,
then for multiple bags and analyze the information to get accurate numbers and assumptions on
what the entire population of skittles bags would be like. We were able to make graphs, find the
mean number and standard deviations, as well as find the confidence intervals for the data we
collected. Then we were able to come up with our own hypothesis tests based on everything we
have collected throughout the semester. I also thought it was interesting how one step of the
project helped us to set up, and solve, the next part of the project.
This project, and the class in general, will definitely help me in future classes and my everyday
life. For example, I have used what I have learned to calculate my average scores for other
classes. Also, later this year I plan on applying for the business program and Im sure I will be
able to use the information we have learned on displaying data in graphs, charts and tables
(among other things) in those classes.
