Content Outline:
The student will recognize that history describes events and people of other times and places by
a) identifying examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of George
Washington
b) identifying the people and events honored by the holidays of Presidents Day
Essential Questions/Knowledge:

What can we learn about people and events from long ago?

Who are the people that we remember on these holidays?

Why do we celebrate these holidays?


Rationale:
Kindergarten students need to understand that George Washington played a big role in our history.
Objectives:
Today we will... identify George Washington and explore why he is important in our history.
So that you can... know about our history and what happened before we were born.
I'll know you have it when... you can identify George Washington and tell me three things you
learned about him.
Opening Question / Activity:
Question students to check for prior knowledge of George Washington.
Read Book-George Washington
Connection:
Play brainpopjr video
Procedures:
-Create George Washington circle graph. (explain what goes in middle, etc.)
-Have students draw a picture or write a word describing/facts about George Washington.
-Students will tape/paste their picture or word onto the graph.
-Discuss.
-Have students complete George Washington Assessment.
Closing Question / Activity: (Closure)
Sing George Washington song.

George Washington, president, quarter, one dollar bill, monument, President's Day, "Father of Our
Country"

Differentiation: Providing visual cues such as concrete models and modeled actions that students
