According to dictionary website, a proverb is a short pithy saying in general use, stating a
general truth or piece of advice (Eastons Bible Dictionary, pg.1). Proverbs are very much found
in the common style of Spanish speakers. The city of Los Angeles houses a large number of
Spanish speakers. This paper will present 20 proverbs in this style. These proverbs were a result
of interviews of two informants.
These are Maria Bautista (M.B) y David Madrigal (D.M). Maria Bautista (MB) was born in
1947 in San Miguel Petapa, Guatemala. She was educated in Guatemala, but only finished
middle school due to financial reasons and to help her family. Her family members always joked
around with proverbs and that is how she remembered most of them. Spanish has always been
her first language, she knows how to fluently write, read, and speak it. However when she came
to the United States, she learned a little bit of English, only speaking a few words and
understanding it.
David Madrigal (D.M) was born in 1988 in Uruapan, Mexico. He was educated in the United
States all his life from elementary to college. David learned a lot of the proverbs from his work
environment and his grandparents. He works at a construction company where many of his coworkers are Spanish speakers and of older age. David is fluent in both Spanish and English
language. What follows are the following proverbs.
