Date: April 18, 2016
Grade/Class/Subject: 1st Grade, Mrs. Stevens, Math
Unit/Theme: Math, Unit 14 Topic Introduction
Lesson Topic: Using Data to Answer Questions
State Standards: Standard: 3. Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability
Concepts: 1. Visual displays of information can used to answer questions.
Evidence Outcome: a. Represent and interpret data, (CCSS: 1.MD)
WIDA Standards: English language learners communicate information, ideas and
concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Mathematics.
Content Objective: Students will be able to create an accurate bar graph that
uses two rows, that shows data and can answer questions.
Language Objective: Students can verbally explain the differences of two objects
present in a bar graph, making sure to compare and contrast the quantities.
Key Vocabulary: Data, Bar graph, Tally mark
Supplementary Materials: White board, marker, counters, game board
Higher Order Questions: How can graphs be used to show data and answer
questions?

Lesson Sequence / Activities

Motivation:
(Building background, links to experience, links to learning)
During writing they wrote opinion pieces about their favorite season. I
took their writing and created some data from it about favorite seasons.
This is the data I will be using during the lesson. Since it was from what
the class chose, it connects to background.
Presentation:
(Language and content objectives, key vocabulary, comprehensible
input, strategies, interaction, feedback)
I will start the lesson off by telling the students the learning targets and
also the language and content objectives. Then I will introduce the key
vocabulary while showing them the seasons data.
Practice and Application:
(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application,

feedback)
They will be working on this math worksheet that involves data, tally
marks, and bar graphs. After they do the worksheet they will play a fun
game called treasure sort. This game will help them measure data.
Review and Assessment:
(Review objectives and vocabulary, variety of formative
assessments/checks for understanding)
Before we start the worksheet I will check for their understanding of the
three new vocabulary words. The worksheet that are working on will be
a formal assessment that I will collect at the end of the lesson. I will
also be circling the room while they play the game and check for
understanding that way.
Extension:
1. I will tell the students the learning targets and the language and
content objective.
2. I will then show the data that the students created when asked
about their favorite season.
3. While I do this I will introduce the vocabulary word data. Then I
will introduce the word tally marks. When I do this I will put the
data into the format using tally marks.
4. After the data is used in tally marks I will change it into a bar
graph. At this time I will introduce the vocabulary word bar
graphs.
5. After going over what a bar graph is, I will ask the students to
decipher what the bar graph means. This will also be a check for
understanding.
6. Then we will watch a video. This video introduces the topic. The
class watches one of these videos every time they start a new
topic.
7. After watching the video the students will do a worksheet. This
worksheet is like a story which has questions about graphs.
8. After this we will do a worksheet together as a class.
9. Then once they are done we will play a game called Treasure
Sort.
10.
This game helps students sort different shapes, sizes, and
colors. This game helps them understand data and how they can
measure data.
11.
After we play the game we will debrief.
12.
During the debrief I will go over the three vocabulary words
again. I will do one more example of a bar graph. I will do this by
asking them a question and using the data the students provide.

Reflections:
I think that overall my SIOP lesson went fairly well. I taught a math lesson about
how graphs help you answer questions using data and graphs. I first started my
showing them a graph I made from data I collected from the students the previous
week. The beginning of the lesson, the hook, went very well. I introduced the key
vocabulary and the students seemed to understand the vocabulary. After I started
the lesson I realized that I totally forgot to mention the learning targets before I
began. As I began the lesson the students seemed engaged in the lesson. Then I
moved on to the story book activity. The students are used to doing this activity and
loved doing it. One thing I could have done better during this time was crowd
control. The kids would get really noisy and sometimes off topic. I was quickly able
to get them back on track though. I also ran out of time to play the game I had
planned. So instead of playing the game I had planned we played another game. I
drew a bar graph on the board and then played for table points. I would ask the
questions about the graph and tables would be awarded points for correct answers.
Since math is always in the afternoon I have never been there for math. So I was
not sure how my CT does things for math. Because of this it felt like I was kind of
winging it because I wasnt sure of the structure. Overall, I think the lesson went
well but there are definitely some things I still need to work on but I think these
things will come with practice. Youtube link here. https://youtu.be/_mtfOZEUHzM
