Violet
Age 6
1st Grade
Reading Level: Independent
Introduction
Violet is a very sweet, energetic, and excited learner in her first grade classroom. She
enjoys reading books and working with different types of technology, such as a tablet or
computer. She likes to read books about animals and play with other students during recess or in
small groups. Violet enjoys going to school and developing her reading skills.
Classroom Observation Notes
I was able to visit Violets classroom two times to obtain information regarding literacy
development. When walking into the classroom, the walls are covered with lists and classroom
activities involving literacy. The room has a word wall, alphabet, and different writing stations as
well for the students to work in. Violet has a teacher, teachers aide, and a novice teacher from
Bradley as well. When visiting the classroom, Violet and her peers were working with the
SMARTboard and matching rhyming words. Violet was attentive and equally participating.
Assessment Results
Sight Words
Violet completed the Sight Words assessment with minimal frustration. She completed
the pre-primer list, primer, first grade, second grade, and third grade list. If there were words that

Violet struggled with, she often took a few extra seconds and self-corrected them. The following
list is the words Violet mispronounced: want, what, were, fall, laugh, and own. For the primer
list, Violet switch the words no and on.
Running Record
Violet read the book, Charlie Goes to the Doctor, by Ree Drummond and Diane deGroat. She
read the entire book with minimal errors. She made a total of 16 errors, most of which were
substitutional. She reads at a very fast pace, which is why she often will replace the written word
with something similar. Overall, she maintained on task and only needed to be redirected to
continue reading two times. The running record was performed out in a hallway, where there was
students walking frequently, which is cause for distraction.
CAB/CPC
Violet performed very well on the Concepts about Books and Conventions of Print
Checklist. She only made two errors at the second and third levels. For the second level, Violet
did not accurately show me, in a book, where it tells a story. For the third level, Violet was
unable to point to words as I read. She completed the checklist without frustration or redirection.
Test of Alphabet Recognition
For the Alphabet Recognition form, Violet had almost a perfect score. She was able to
identify all her uppercase letters correctly and without hesitation. For her lowercase letters,
Violet had one problem with the letter L. At first, Violet believed it was the letter I, but after
careful consideration, she corrected herself and said it was an l.

PAT 2
Violet performed excellent on the Phonological Awareness Test 2. Even though I gave
Violet two assessments, she was able to answer all of my questions to the best of her abilities.
For this assessment, Violet passed all areas without error. She did not need me to repeat the
directions or given additional examples; she did very well.
Yopp Singer
This final assessment was nothing difficult for Violet. The Yopp-Singer Test of Phoneme
Segmentation was performed correctly and without any form of hesitation. Violet listened to my
instructions as given and segmented each word correctly and fluidly. I gave her the three practice
items listed, which she did accurately as well.
3 Strengths
Violet is a very smart first grade student. She is able to orally express herself without
frustration. One strength I noticed very early on was her ability to read sight words. Violet is
exposed to the English language both at home and at school, and her assessment results show
that. Another strength I saw was Violets ability to comprehend what she is reading. Her
comprehension skills are developmentally appropriate, as she is able to predict what will happen
next and how to make connections. Finally, another strength Violet has is her concepts about
writing. She knows what side to start writing on a piece of a paper, proper spacing between
words, and identifying different types of punctuation.

3 Weaknesses
Even though Violet performed well very on her assessments, she has room for
improvement. When completing the Sight Word lists I administered, Violet had trouble with
words that begin with the letter w. She had difficulty blending the wh sounds and forming
the words. Another area that Violet can improve on is following along in a story. While Violet
can read most words in front of her, she has difficulty remaining on task and following the words
consistently. Finally, another weakness that Violet needs improvement is reading at a slower pace
to avoid making errors. While completing her running record, the errors Violet made could have
been avoided had she slow her pace down. She was able to self-correct a few words, but other
errors made were due to overlooking certain words.
Writing Samples
The two writing samples I have included are description entries Violet wrote. The first
one is about what she did over the summer. She wrote about how she went to the pool, what she
ate, and other activities. She also included a picture as well. The second sample is about Violet
and her new pet, fish. Her writing samples show that Violet knows that sentences are written
from left to right and that it is important to space words out as well. She also has a concrete
concept of punctuation, such as periods and exclamation points.
