Life Goes On
Like fan fictions, you can also write poems about the gaps found in different parts of a
movie. For example, throughout the various gaps found in the movie Divergent, I chose to
write about the part where, after Beatrices mom was killed, she was forced to move along and
find where her brother and father where hiding. However, in that scene, we dont really know
what happened after she ran away from the guards. We only know that she eventually found her
brother and dad. In my poem, the death of Ashley really left Tris heart broken, frustrated,
depressed, and it almost seemed impossible for her to continue on with her life.
The poem is free verse style, thus, youll see how in each stanza the number of verses are
different. However, it also includes some rhymes in it. The poem starts explaining how she was
trying to escape from the guards who Jeanine had sent since, after all, they were being mind
control. Later in the poem, Tris managed to escape and found a nearby corner where she sat there
for a minute or two and started contemplating what just happened. A poetic device found here is
a hyperbole when it says Millions of thought came right through me. In here, we can see how
Millions of thoughts is emphasized by saying that at that moment, after losing someone very
close to you, you start thinking about a lot of things at the same time. It was even harder for Tris
to accept that her mother, who just saved her a few moments ago, was no longer going to be with
her. Another poetic device seen in the poem its when Tris said The gun who kept staring at
me. Now, the poetic device thats being used its called personification. Obviously, guns dont

stare at people, but in here the word staring its used to illustrate the fact that Tris felt like the
weapon itself was trying to tell her something beyond words. That is to say, Tris was having an
inner struggle with herself whether it was worth it to continue living without her mother. Indeed,
sometimes life can be way harder to live without our parents at a young age since they are the
ones who are there for you whenever you need them. Sometimes, it just feels like you may not
accomplish anything in life without them.
Other poetic devices found in the poem are imagery and metaphor. Examples of these are
shown when Tris says how much shes going to miss her mother and some of her features like
Your soft and sweet touch and Your gentle smile. When you read this, you can clearly
visualize in your mind a gentle smile and feel the soft and sweet touch. We call this imagery.
The metaphor found in the poem talks about how Ashley was Beatrices guide and savior
whenever she felt lost in the world by saying You were the light in my darkest nights. The
figure of a parent can also be presented in many cases as protection and guidance in our lives.
Like I said before, taking away this figure might make you feel completely vulnerable and
useless.
Finally, near the end of the poem, it is presented the poetic device of simile. For instance,
it is shown when Tris said Like I was hypnotized, I held the gun in my head. Again, Tris is
trying to emphasize the feeling of how desperate and heart broken she was that she was willing
to end her life. Nonetheless, Tris realized that her mom wouldnt wanted to do that. In fact, she
raised her to be brave and strong, which in this case, Tris had to accept what happened and
continue on with her life. Sometimes, whenever happens a tragedy in our lives, its always
important to try and stay stable and always try to move on. Not that you need to forget about
what happened or anything, but we cant always be stuck in the past, its never healthy.

Briefly, in the poem we found various poetic devices like metaphor, simile,
personification, hyperbole, etc. where each and one of them emphasized, somehow, what Tris felt
like after losing her mother. Also, the message that the poem conveys is that no matter what
tragedy we are forced to face in our lives, what counts its how we manage the situation and
acknowledge that life goes on. The reason I chose to write about this topic was because I know
that losing a parent must be one of the hardest tragedies in life and I think that thoughts like Tris
had were completely normal with certain limits. In fact, even myself sometimes thinks about
what would happen if I ever had to pass to a tragedy like this. Obviously, everyone manages
situations like this differently. At then end, what really manners its that taking away our lives is
never the answer and most important, what we really need is to find ourselves good treatment or
having that someone that can help us go through with it.
