This Is the Way We Go to School by Edith Baer and Illustrated by Steve Bjorkman
This is the Way We Go to School is a book intended to teach preschool children the different ways that children around
the world go to school.

Describe how and provide a rationale for the way you have grouped students for this lesson:
The students will sit on the carpet and this will be a whole group lesson as requested by the cooperating teacher.

Virginia Literacy Foundation Block 2 Vocabulary
The child will develop an understanding of word meanings through the use of appropriate and expanding vocabulary

Objectives:
The students will develop transportation vocabulary.
The students will learn about different cultures.

Ferry: A boat that transports people or vehicles across a body of water and operates on regular schedule.
Jog: When you jog you run in a slower pace.
Metro: A subway system.
Vaporetto: A motorboat used as a passenger bus along a canal in Venice Italy.
Skidoo- A snowmobile. A snowmobile is a vehicle that has skis instead of tires and is driven in the snow.

Materials needed/preparation of the learning environment: This is the Way we Go to School book, White
board, marker, paper, crayons, handouts, and laminated items.

Plans for differentiation:


I will make sure to check in with students who tend to have trouble focusing to make sure that they are being effective
participants during the read aloud itself, discussion, and activity. Throughout the read aloud, I will point out words,
drawings, and important events, in hopes that I will reach every childs interest and level of understanding. During the
activity, I will go around the room to make sure each student is getting the help they need.

Introduce the book: This Is the Way We Go to School. Tell the students who the
author and illustrator are.
Say: Today we are going to use this book to learn about the different ways that
children get to school in different parts of the world. Then I will inform the
students that we are going to create a list of the different ways we go to school.
Students will then raise their hands and tell me how they get to school (bus, car,
bike, etc).

Begin reading the book. Say: How is Ellen getting to school? Do you think she is
enjoying her view?
Say: Why would Liz and Larry wear jogging shoes to school? Why would they
wear roller skates? Do we wear roller skates to school? No! Then we would have
no room in our cubby to store them. After the roller skating to school, kids are
taking the bus to school. Say: Raise your hand if you take the bus to school.
Say: Now Jenny and Jerry take the ferry to school. What do you think a ferry is
and do you ride the ferry on land? Point out that the ferry is in water. Inform the
students that a ferry is a boat.
Say: A cable car takes you up and down the hill to school. Can you imagine
having to walk up the hill to school? You would be so tired!!

Say: Did you know that some people take horse-and-buggy rides to school?
Would you like to get to school this way?
Say: Wow in Philly they take the trolley to school. Inform the students what a
trolley is.
Say: Biance, Beppo, and Bendetto ride the vaporetto. Do you all notice that
students around the world get to school in different ways? Inform the students
what a vaporetto is.
Say: Do we go to school when its snowing outside? Isnt it neat that Niels and
Solveig go to school on skis? Skis are used in the snow.
Say: Where do you think Ahmed is if its sunny outside? Could he live near a
beach?
I will tell the students what a vale is. Say: Is this something that is in the air?
Say: Wow Kay and Fay go to school by radio. Does that mean that they dont
have to travel anywhere to get to school?
Say: In Nanjing the students like to bike to school. How many of you have a bike
you like to ride?
Say: William goes to school on a boat? Is that like a ferry?
Say: Do you think the metro line is like a train?
Say: Copter? What is a copter?

After reading I will draw a line beside the way we get to school and on the other side
I will ask the students to tell me the different ways students who live in different parts

Say: I am going to give you this piece of paper. What you are going to do is draw
your own picture of how you would like to get to school. Does your drawing have to
be the way that you came to school today? No it can be anyway that you would like
to go to school.
Students will go back to their seats and complete the handout How would you like to
get to school Students will be given crayons and will color a picture of how they
would like to get to school.

When everyone has finished coloring their pictures, I will ask the students to put their
papers in their cubby to send home. The students will return to the carpet to share
what they drew to the person sitting beside them. After giving the students a chance
to share I will say Now you know that children around the world go to school in many
different ways.

What could go wrong with this lesson and what will you do about it?
Students may not be able to understand all the vocabulary. I will have pictures laminated of types of transportation they
may struggle with and put them on the white board.
Students may not feel challenged drawing the pictures. Give them support and encouragement to draw the pictures.
