experience them directly (i.e., articles, biographies, Internet resources and nonfiction
books)

Standard 1: Physical Science
5.1.1 Describe and measure the volume and weight of a sample of a given material.
5.1.3 Demonstrate that regardless of how parts of an object are assembled the weight of the
whole object is identical to the sum of the weight of the parts; however, the volume can differ
from the sum of the volumes.

Mathematics
Students should be able to develop the correct formulas to find the correct measurements of a
baseball field and the bases.
MEASUREMENT
5.M.3: Develop and use formulas for the area of triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids. Solve
real-world and other mathematical problems that involve perimeter and area of triangles,
parallelograms and trapezoids, using appropriate units for measures.

THEMATIC UNIT

5.M.5: Apply the formulas V = l w h and V = B h for right rectangular prisms to find
volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole- number edge lengths to solve real-world
problems and other mathematical problems.
