Science Reflection
After reading from the science framework, I realized that the
knowledge that teachers need to teach science in an elementary classroom
is quite different from the knowledge of other users of science. Teachers
must be prepared to deeply understand the science concepts such as early
experiences in science so that students develop skills that empower them to
participate

in

an

increasingly

scientific

and

technological

world.

As

Educators, we are expected to be able to implement science as a basic

component of the elementary school curriculum so students may understand
them. In the science frame work, it mentioned that teachers must be able
assess student learning through a Varity of methods. Teachers also are
expected to fully understand the scientific content of state standards and
grade level expectations. One of the many great tips in the science frame
work is for teachers to communicate learning goals to parents and education
officials. For instance, administrators providing support for teacher by
introducing and explaining the California common core state standards to
parents. The science frame discusses that science is one of the most
important subjects because it prepares students for better future with more
opportunities to success. It also discusses that teachers should focus on
making science fun for students. This helps students develop an interest in
the school subject. For all those type of knowledge that teachers need to

know and the expectation of students there must be more science programs
and projects that prepares teachers to be better educators and prepare
students for college and careers.
During my journey of education, I have taken many science classes
that prepared me to teaching elementary science. I have taken Biology 102,
Biology 103, SMT 416, Physics 300, and Astronomy. Biology 102 and biology
103 are mainly about teaching future elementary educators how to
explain the nature of the genetic material (DNA) and how it replicates, stores
and transmits information.

Through those courses I learned how new

organisms are produced sexually and how they develop from a fertilized egg.
I believe now I will be able to describe the five Kingdoms of organisms, and
the function and structure of the major organ systems in animals and
humans. I also took a great science class which is SMT 416 and it is mainly
for preparing future elementary teachers to teach earth science. Through the
SMT 416 class I learned many valuable information about planet Earth
including

such

topics

as

geology,

volcanoes,

earthquakes,

fossils,

oceanography, weather, and astronomy as appropriate for elementary and

junior high school teachers.
After taking those classes I realized that Im well prepared in areas that
discusses the facts, concepts, and principles organized under the heading of
physical and life science such as genetic material , organisms production
,and the differences between virus and bacterial diseases. I also feel that Im

less prepared in earth and space science such as solar system, the universe
astronomy, and the structure and composition of earth. I believe I would
need to read or take more classes on those subjects to be fully prepared to
teach them in higher than elementary classrooms.
The science preparation classes made me understand the elementary
science concepts (physical, life, and earth) and I feel that Im able to teach
that information in an elementary classroom. By reading the science
framework I now understand the importance of linking the science lesson
plans to the science standards of the grade I will be teaching. Science is
I plan to share biology 103, biology 102, and SMT assignments as
artifacts in my portfolio. One of the artifacts that I can share is an essay
paper on bacterial and virus diseases; I can also share a platform assignment
from My SMT course.
