Math Reflection
After reading from the mathematics framework, I realized that the
knowledge that teachers need to teach mathematics in elementary classroom is
quite different from the knowledge of other users of mathematics. Teachers must
be prepared to deeply understand the mathematical ideas such as concepts and
reasoning skills. As educators, we are expected to be able to represent and connect
mathematical ideas so students may understand them. In the math framework, it
mentioned that teachers must be able assess student learning through a varity of
methods. Teachers also are expected to fully understand the mathematical content
of state standards and grade level expectations. One of the many great tips in the
math framework is for teachers to communicate learning goals to parents and
education officials. For instance, administrators providing support for teacher by
introducing and explaining the California common core state standards to parents.
The math framework discusses that math is one of the most important subjects
because it prepares students for a better future with more opportunities to success.
For all those type of knowledge that teachers need to know and the expectation of
students there must be more mathematical programs that prepare teachers to be
better educators and prepare students for college and careers.

During my journey of education, I have taken many math classes that

prepared me to teach elementary math. I have taken Math 207 which was mainly
about teaching future elementary educators how to engage in mathematical
problem solving and geometric thinking. Through this class I learned how to
conduct simple experiments, predict probabilities of outcome and verify the data.
After taking Math 207 I understood the concept of measurement in both the
standard and the metric systems. I learned how to convert measurements with
systems for examples yards to inches. I understood the elementary statistical
concepts (mean, median, and mode). I also took another great math class, Math
131, which is designed to prepare future elementary teacher to be able to teach
students the rules of probability, regression, and the describing distribution with
graphs and numbers.
I feel that Im well prepared to teach probability and statistics since I have
taken more than one class discussing this mathematics area. I also think that Im
well prepared to teach elementary algebra such as variable equations. The
mathematics area that Im less prepared in is geometry. I believe that I have to be
more prepared in calculating the area and the perimeter for all types of triangles
and quadrilaterals. I plan to share Math 131, Math 207, and Physical Science 300
assignments as artifacts in my portfolio. Those work samples demonstrate my

knowledge in mathematics by showing my ability to solve those problems and

using many examples to explain those certain topics.
I believe that those math classes prepared me as a future elementary teacher
and I see myself using the work samples from those math classes in my classroom
and making mathematics lesson plans. Each one of those math for elementary
teacher classes helped me through understanding mathematics.

Before taking

those courses I was able to solve math problems but I was not able to explain the
reasoning of the answers, and I learned how to explain the answers of the problem
solving.
