CONSIDER THE STRATEGIES

Choose five strategies from Advancing Differentiation and five strategies from Cobb County
Advanced Learning Strategies.
1. Give the name of the strategy.
2. Give a procedural description of each strategy. This should be the nuts and bolts of the
strategy.
3. In the My Classroom space, describe how you might use the strategy as part of one of
your own lessons. The following should be included in your description:
a. In what grade level and content is the strategy being used?
b. How will students be grouped? Why would you group them this way?
c. How will you implement the strategy?
d. How will the effectiveness of the strategy be evaluated?
4. In the I Wonder category, discuss any doubts or concerns you have about the strategy
as well as anything you dont understand.
EXAMPLE (From Cobb County Advanced Learning Strategies)
Name of Strategy:
Error Analysis
Description of Strategy:
Analyze a possible solution to a problem or question for errors and provide written
details on how to correct the errors or explain what steps should not have been
taken to avoid the error.
In My Classroom:
a. I could use this strategy in my 8th grade math class during our study of multistep equations.
b. Students will be placed in small groups of two to four students according to
skill level. Student placement will be based on pre-test results. Students will
be grouped in this manner so they may work at a level that will develop math
knowledge and confidence. Students who do not yet have a good
understanding of the process of solving equations will start with simpler
problems before moving to more difficult ones. At the same time, students
who are operating at a higher-order thinking level can be challenged
appropriately. By identifying common mistakes themselves, students learn to
avoid them.
c. Each group of students will be provided with problems of progressive
complexity based on level of readiness. Each of the problems presented will
contain a mistake. Students must find the error in the multi-step equation,
describe in writing what the problem-solver did wrong, and then correct it.
d. The effectiveness of this strategy will be evaluated based on a rubric provided
as well as student performance on post-test compared to pre-test.
I Wonder:
I am concerned about having so many different levels of learning taking place and
my ability to be in so many places at the same time. I think it might be better to
have all students work on one problem together first so that I can introduce this
strategy to my students before giving the small groups individualized problems.
