within themselves and others.
30 minutes (lunch time)
Good Leader Characteristics List, Leadership Compass Self-Assessment, Posttest

Opening; What is Leadership?; Compass Activity; Discussion of activity;

1. Opening (4 minutes)
a. Introduction of Counselor
b. Counselor will discuss why leadership is an important topic for this group
of students
c. Counselor asks for volunteer(s) to state what he/she thinks a leader is like
2. What is Leadership? (10 minutes)
a. Counselor will ask students to divide into groups of 3 or 4
b. Each group should compile a list of words, qualities, and characteristics
that they think are found in a good leader
c. After giving students time to work on the list, counselor will ask each group
to share one thing from their list. Continue to have groups share one item
at a time. After each share, counselor may ask the other groups if they
have that item on their lists as well.
d. Have students look at the Good Leader Characteristics List that was given
to them and see if there are any that surprise them or that they think are
very important
e. Discuss main ideas about leadership that were brought up from sharing

the lists
3. Compass Activity (7 minutes)
a. Counselor will explain and hand out The Leadership Compass SelfAssessment
b. Have students complete the assessment. Help to define words, and
answer any questions as they complete the assessment.
c.

When students are finished taking and scoring the assessment, ask them
to share their results.

d. Discuss whether results seemed accurate or not; do students see


similarities between themselves and others who scored similarly?; are
students sitting with others who have the same results?
4. Discussion (9 minutes)
a. Discuss leadership styles and how students might use these in their
communities, schools, and at home.
b. Discuss who can be a leader (anyone) and how students can find
leadership qualities in others
c. Discuss how different leadership styles can be effective in working together

5. Post-test (3 minutes)
- If there is enough time left, distribute post-tests, otherwise, give post-tests the
following week/NJHS meeting

Process Data:
Around 11 students (all 8th grade students who are members of the National Junior
Honor Society)

Perception Data:
Counselor will observe the group and listen to their responses in order to gauge how
helpful the lesson is. Counselor will also use a post-test to evaluate learning after
lesson is complete.

Outcome Data:
Counselor will use post-tests to evaluate learning after lesson is complete.
FOLLOW-UP PLAN:

Students will be asked to take special note of leadership roles all around them.
Students will also be given the post-test if they had not taken it already.
