    Ax 2012 - Unable to delete an unused Financial Dimension Value DAX Knowledge Pot I came across the following issue earlier this week, and thought i'd share my findings with the wider community. After creating a new financial dimension (about a week elapsed), a decision was made to delete the newly created financial dimension. We knew these dimension values weren't used on any posted or un-posted transactions, so the expectation was that we could simply delete these without any issues.

    UseCasescenario
    Aftercreatinganewfinancialdimension(aboutaweekelapsed),adecisionwasmadetodeletethenewly
    createdfinancialdimension.
    Weknewthesedimensionvalueswerentusedonanypostedorunpostedtransactions,sotheexpectation
    wasthatwecouldsimplydeletethesewithoutanyissues.Soyoucanimaginethesurprisewhenwetried
    todeletethedimensionvaluesonlytoreceivethefollowingerrormessage:
    Afinancialdimensionvalueisbasedonthe<dimensionvalue>recordandhasbeenusedona
    transaction.Youcannotdeletethe<dimensionvalue>record.

    SobeforeImoveonandexplainhowtheissuewasresolved,letmestartoffwithalittlecaveat
    Thedescriptionbelowisntacomprehensivebreakdownthatcoversallpossiblescenariosthatresultin
    recordsbeinginsertedintotheDimensionAttributeLevelValuetable,butitillustratestheusecasescenario
    thatcausedtheabovementionedissue.

    SowhendoesthesystemcreaterecordsintheDimensionAttributeLevelValuetable?
    Oneoftheusecasesthatresultinrecordsbeingcreatedinthistableiswhenauser,asan
    example,createsanewgeneraljournallineandentersinthefinancialdimensionsonthatline.
    Atthisstagethesystemcreates(ifitdoesntalreadyexists)anentryinthe
    DimensionAttributeValueCombinationforthefinancialdimensioncombinationspecifiedonthe
    generaljournalline.Themakeupofthespecifiedfinancialdimensioncombinationisthenstored
    intheDimensionAttributeLevelValuetable.
    ForExample:
    Ifthefinancialdimensioncombinationreads0100OU_1OU_3566,(where0100representsthe
    MainAccountId,OU_1theDepartmentFinancialdimension,andOU_3566representstheCost
    CentreFinancialdimension),thesystemwillcreate2recordsinthe
    DimensionAttributeLevelValuetable,namely
    OnerecordwillbefortheDepartmentCodeOU_1
    ThesecondrecordwillbefortheCostCentreOU_3566.

    Soknowingthis,wewereabletodeducethataJournalLinewascreatedtotestfinancial
    dimensionstructuresandhierarchies.TheTestjournallinewasdeleted(notposted),butthe
    actionofenteringinthejournallineresultedinrecordsbeingcreatedintheabovementioned
    tables.

    Toresolvethis,andallowtheDimensionValuetobedeleted,therecordscreatedintheabove
    mentionedtableswouldneedtobemanuallydeleted.

    ImveryinterestedtoknowifthereisatoolthatcanbeusedtocleanupanyunusedFinancial
    Dimensioncombinationsi.e.financialdimensioncombinationsthatwerecreatedinthesystem,
    butthatarentassociatedwithanypostedorunpostedtransactions.
