Technology Takeover
Mobile devices are frequently used throughout the day and can give a person the ability
to access almost anything in just seconds. It is a piece of equipment invented to be useful for
problem solving and communication (Holmes). Modern day society makes it easy to purchase
different items of technology such as cell phones, computers, and tablets. People now
communicate through devices instead of having real life conversations. The emotions and
physicality of a person are altered because of daily use with this technology. The increasing
dependence on mobile devices has been detrimental to people's social skills, mentality, and
physical effects.
People depend largely on technology because a large amount of what people do daily is
held on electronic devices. Throughout the day people use mobile devices for entertainment,
navigation, quick communication, or anything that can be googled in less than a few seconds. A
number of these devices use the internet. The internet first began as a highly advanced
communication system for the government in the late 1980s and by 1991, the world wide web
was invented by Tim Berners Lee, and made public in 1993 (Holmes). This allowed the public to
finally have information about the world at their fingertips. Today, currently 1.5 billion people
use the internet daily (Holmes).
The rapid growth of mobile devices has changed the way people go about their daily life.
Technology has caused the government to change laws to adapt to a more modern age (Wills).

Some laws include hands free cell phone use while driving and restriction on cyber related
activity. Technology has brought restriction to this modern era because the improper and illegal
use of it. In daily life mobile technology is seen as a 24/7 experience and people are constantly
with their devices at all hours of the day (Cole). Modern day experiences have caused people to
work off their phone and check their devices due to work, school, and boredom (Wood). The use
of mobile devices has changed the way society functions throughout daily life and the
government.
Societys daily use of mobile devices is causing a regression of social skills. People today
do not get a full interaction with a person face to face because it is done through an electronic
device. Communication online is a completely different experience online than in person (Sun).
Emotions can not be determined online because a person may not be able interpret the correct
meaning of a message. Many people today prefer texting than a phone call or meeting the a
person in real life (Cole). Due to this lack of verbal communication many people have a lack of
experience with having conversations in person (Sun). Few in person conversations affects how a
person performs in an job interview (Summers). A person that does not experience having faceto-face conversations may have a difficult time being comfortable as well as presenting
themselves well. Communication through mobile devices does not give people the experience
they need for communicating with a person face to face (Sun). Not only is hiding behind a screen
reducing communication in person, but it also allows a person to commit fraud.
Fraud through the internet allows a person to be whoever and whatever they want by
being hidden behind a screen. Social media makes it easier for a person or criminal to use the
internet improperly. Not knowing how to communicate properly in person makes a person chose
to be whoever they want to be online to make it easier for them to communicate (Wood). Many

people are being lied to online on how a person looks or what their real life is like. This makes it
easier for child molesters to target and deceive children through the internet (Teschler).
Inexperience of face to face conversations leads to fraud and has caused people to lie and commit
crimes, this then can damage a persons mentality.
A persons mentality can be damaged from mobile devices through the use of social
media. Many people look to social media to fill voids because they are constantly comparing
themselves to others (Kaplan). When people see others go places on social media it makes a
person feel left out and may cause them to pursue the same events. In a proven study, by Ottawa
Public Health, it showed that because teens use social media for at least two hours each day
(Kaplan). The use of it caused 25% of teenagers to have symptoms of anxiety and depression,
and having suicidal thoughts (Kaplan). Social media has very negative affect on young people
because they are always wanting things that they do not have. Many then have negative feelings
towards others and which then results in bullying. Social Media has evolved the ways people are
bullied. People comment, post, and give their opinion online. Many times peoples actions online
result in them being bullied and mistreated (Wood). Social Media causes people to feel negative
emotions, but also can cause harmful physical effects.
Americans spend on average 7 hours and 30 minutes looking at a mobile device's screen
throughout the day which results in many harmful physical effects (Epstein). In a technology
screen their is a light called blue light that is unnatural. The light from electronic devices are
short-wavelength from blue light which negatively affects a persons sleep-inducing hormone
melatonin (Schmerler). Blue light largely affects a persons circadian rhythm and the times in
which dictate function in the bodys organs takes place (Schmerler). With blue light people do
not get enough sleep , this is linked with problems of depression, diabetes, and cardiovascular

problems (Schmerler). Blue Light from technology has harmful physical effects on a persons
body that can last long term.
Mobile devices in today's modern age are used as a shortcut for almost all daily tasks in
daily life. With access to these devices people are able to accomplish more in less time (Cole). It
is quicker to send an email, call, text, and navigate. More people are connected to each other,
making everyone involved in the world. It allows people to people enjoy mobile devices because
it allows them to have something instantly, instead of coming up with ideas and doing things on
their own (Teschler). This is causes people to struggle in situations where they are forced to
come up with their own ideas. Being instantly connected causes problems more relationship
issues that could be avoided if mobile devices were not used (Teschler). People need to develop
their own thinking instead of relying on the media for an answer. Although there are some
beneficial reasons to use mobile devices they should not be depended on.
Mobile devices haved helped to move society into the modern age and this change has
resulted in an increasing dependence on them . This has had a negative effect on society by
regressing people's social skills, mentality, and physical effects. With the lack of in person
communication, it lessens a person's ability to verbally communicate and makes fraud more
obtainable to criminals. A persons mentality can be damaged from using mobile devices for
social media. This can lead to depression and anxiety from having negative experiences online.
Lastly, mobile devices can ruin a persons body long term from blue light. Mobile devices have
shown a negative affect in many areas of a person's life, because of this they should be not be
depended on.
