Itisbythestraightlineandthecirclethatthefirstandmostsimpleexampleandrepresentationofallthings
maybedemonstrated,whethersuchthingsbeeithernonexistentormerelyhiddenunderNature'sveils.

THEOREMII
Neitherthecirclewithouttheline,northelinewithoutthepoint,canbeartificially
produced.Itis,therefore,byvirtueofthepointandtheMonadthatallthingscommenceto
emergeinprinciple.
Thatwhichisaffectedattheperiphery,howeverlargeitmaybe,cannotinanywaylackthesupportofthe
centralpoint.

THEOREMIII
Therefore,thecentralpointwhichweseeinthecentreofthehieroglyphic
MonadproducestheEarth,roundwhichtheSun,theMoon,andtheother
planetsfollowtheirrespectivepaths.TheSunhasthesupremedignity,andwe
representhimbyacirclehavingavisiblecentre.

THEOREMIV
AlthoughthesemicircleoftheMoonisplacedabovethecircleoftheSunandwouldappeartobesuperior,
neverthelessweknowthattheSunisrulerandKing.WeseethattheMooninhershapeandherproximity
rivalstheSunwithhergrandeur,whichisapparenttoordinarymen,yettheface,orasemisphereofthe
Moon,alwaysreflectsthelightoftheSun.Itdesiressomuchtobeimpregnatedwithsolarraysandtobe
transformedintoSunthatattimesitdisappearscompletelyfromtheskiesandsomedaysafterreappears,and
wehaverepresentedherbythefigureoftheHorns(Cornucopia).

AndtrulyIgivethecompletionoftheideaofthesolarcirclebyaddingasemicirclefortheMoon,forthe
morningandtheeveningwerethefirstday,anditwasthereforeinthefirst(day)thattheLightofthe
Philosopherswasmade(orproduced).

THEOREMVI
WeseeherethattheSunandtheMoonaresupportedupontherightangledCross.ThisCrossmay
signifyveryprofoundly,andforsufficientreasonsinourhieroglyph,eithertheTernaryorthe
Quaternary.TheTernaryismadebythetwostraightlineshavingacopulativecentre.
TheQuaternaryisproducedbythefourstraightlinesenclosingfourrightangles.Eitherofthese
elements,thelinesortherightangles,repeatedtwice,therefore,affordusinthemostsecretmanner
theOctad,whichIdonotbelievewasknowntoourpredecessors,theMagi,andwhichyoushouldstudywith
greatattention.ThethreefoldmagicofthefirstFathersandthewisemenconsistedinBody,SoulandSpirit.
Therefore,wehaveherethefirstmanifestedSeptenary,thatistosay,twostraightlineswithacommonpoint
whichmakethree,andthefourlineswhichconvergetoformthecentralpointinseparatingthefirsttwo.

THEOREMVII
TheElementsbeingfarfromtheiraccustomedplaces,thehomogeneouspartsaredislocated,andthisaman
learnsbyexperiment,foritisalongthestraightlinesthattheyreturnnaturallyandeffectivelytothesesame
places.Therefore,itwillnotbeabsurdtorepresentthemysteryofthefourElements,inwhichitispossible
toresolveeachoneintoelementaryform,byfourstraightlinesrunninginfourcontrarydirectionsfromone
commonandindivisiblepoint.Hereyouwillnoticeparticularlythatthegeometriciansteachthatalineis
producedbythedisplacementofapoint:wegivenoticethatitmustbethesamehere,andforasimilar
reason,becauseourelementarylinesareproducedbyacontinualcascadeofdropletsasafluxinthe
mechanismofourmagic.

Besides,thekabbalisticextensionoftheQuaternaryaccordingtothecommonformulaofnotation(because
wesayone,two,three,andfour)isanabridgedorreducedformoftheDecad.ThisisbecausePythagoras
wasinthehabitofsaying:1+2+3+4make10.ItisnotbychancethattherightangledCrossthatistosay,
thetwentyfirstletteroftheRomanalphabet,whichwasconsideredasbeingformedbyfourstraightlines
wastakenbythemostancientoftheRomanPhilosopherstorepresenttheDecad.
Further,theyhavedefinedtheplacewheretheTernaryconductsitsforceintotheSeptenary.

WeseethatallthisaccordsperfectlywiththeSunandMoonofourMonad,because,bythemagicofthefour
Elements,anexactseparationupontheiroriginallinesmustbemadefollowingwhichthecirculatory
conjunctionwithinthesolarcomplementthroughtheperipheriesofthesesamelinesisperformed,because
howeverlongagivenlinemaybe,itispossibletodescribeacirclepassingthroughitsextremes,following
thelawsofthegeometricians.Therefore,wecannotdenyhowusefultheSunandtheMoonaretoour
Monad,inconjunctionwiththedecadalproportionoftheCross.

ThemysticalsignoftheRam,composedoftwosemicirclesconnectedbyonecommonpoint,isveryjustly
attributedtotheplaceoftheequinoctialnycthemeron,becausetheperiodoftwentyfourhoursdividedby

TheveryancientwisemenandMagi
havetransmittedtousfivehieroglyphical
signsoftheplanets,allofwhichare
composedoutofthesignsusedforthe
MoonandtheSun,togetherwiththesign
oftheElementsandthehieroglyphical
signofAries,theRam,whichwill
becomeapparenttothosewhoexamine
thesefigures:
Eachoneofthesesignswillnotbedifficulttoexplainaccordingtothehieroglyphicalmannerinviewofour
fundamentalprinciples,alreadyposited.Tobeginwith,wewillspeakinparaphrasesofthosewhichpossess
thecharacteristicsoftheMoon:followingthat,ofthosewhichpossessasolarcharacter.Whenourlunar
nature,bythescienceoftheElements,hadaccomplishedthefirstrevolutionroundourEarth,thenitwas
called,mystically,Saturn.
Afterwards,atthefollowingrevolution,itwasnamed
Jupiter,andholdsaverysecretfigure.ThentheMoon,
developedbyyetathirdjourney,wasrepresentedvery
obscurelyagainbythisfigurewhichitwastheircustom
tocallMercury
.YouseehowthisisLunar.Thatit
mustbeconductedthroughafourthrevolutionwillnotbecontrarytoourmostsecretdesign,whatever
certainsagesmaysay.Inthismannerthepuremagicalspirit,byitsspiritualvirtue,willperformtheworkof
thealbificationattheplaceoftheMoontousaloneandasitwereinthemiddleofanaturaldayhewill
speakhieroglyphicallywithoutwords,introducingandimprintingthesefourgeogonicfiguresinthepure
Earthverysimplypreparedbyus:thislastfigurebeinginthemiddleofalltheothers.

NowregardthemysticalcharacterofMars!IsitnotformedfromthehieroglyphsoftheSunandAries,the
magisteryoftheElementspartlyintervening?AndthatofVenusIwishtoknowisitnotproducedfrom
thatoftheSunandtheElementsaccordingtothebestexponents?Therefore,theplanetslooktowardsthe
solarperipheryandtheworkofrevivification.

IntheprogressionwewillnoticethisotherMercury willappearwhoistrulythetwinbrotherofthefirst:
forbythecompleteLunarandSolarmagicoftheElements,theHieroglyphofthisMessengerspeakstous
verydistinctly,andweshouldexamineitcarefullyandlistentowhatitsays.And(bytheWillofGod)itis
theMercuryofthePhilosophers,thegreatlycelebratedmicrocosmandADAM.Therefore,someofthemost
expertwereinclinedtoplacehiminapositionof,andgivehimarankequalto,theSunhimself.

ThiswecannotperforminthepresentepochunlessweaddtothiscoralinecrystalworkacertainSOUL
separatedfromthebodybythepyrognomicart.Itisverydifficulttoaccomplishthisandveryperilous
becauseofthefireandthesulphurwhichthebreathcontainswithinit.ButcertainlythisSoulcanperform
marvellousthings.Forexample,joinitbyindissolubletiestothediscoftheMoon(oratleastofMercury)by
LuciferandFire.Inthethirdplace,itisnecessarythatweshouldshow(inordertodemonstrateour
Septenarynumber)thatitistheSunofPhilosophersitself.Youwillobservetheexactitudeaswellasthe
claritywithwhichthisanatomyofourHieroglyphicMonadcorrespondstowhatissignifiedinthearcanaof
thesetwotheorems.

THEOREMXIV
ItisthereforeclearlyconfirmedthatthewholemagisterydependsupontheSunandtheMoon.Thrice
GreatestHermeshasrepeatedlytoldusthisinaffirmingthattheSunisitsfatherandtheMoonisitsmother:
andweknowtrulythattheredearth(terralemnia)isnourishedbytheraysoftheMoonandtheSunwhich
exerciseasingularinfluenceuponit.

THEOREMXV
Wesuggest,therefore,thatPhilosophersshouldconsidertheactionoftheSunandtheMoonupontheEarth.

TheywillnoticethatwhenthelightoftheSunentersAries,thentheMoon,whensheentersthenextsign,
thatistosayTaurus,receivesanewdignityinthelightandisexaltedinthatsigninrespectofhernatural
virtues.TheAncientsexplainedthisproximityoftheluminariesthemostremarkableofallbyacertain
mysticsignunderthenameoftheBull.ItisverycertainthatitisthisexaltationoftheMoontowhichintheir
treatisestheastronomersfromthemostancienttimesbearwitness.Thismysterycanbeunderstoodonlyby
thosewhohavebecometheAbsolutePontiffsoftheMysteries.Forthesamereasontheyhavesaidthat
TaurusisthehouseofVenusthatistosay,ofconjugallove,chasteandprolific,fornaturerejoicesin
nature,asthegreatOstanesconcealedinhismostsecretmysteries.TheseexaltationsareacquiredbytheSun,
becausehehimself,afterhavingundergonemanyeclipsesofhislight,receivedtheforceofMars,andissaid
tobeexaltedinthissamehouseofMarswhichisourRam(Aries).
Thismostsecretmysteryisclearlyandperfectlyshowninour
MonadbythehieroglyphicfigureofTaurus,whichishere
represented,andbythatofMars,whichwehaveindicatedin
TheoremXIIandTheoremXIIIbytheSunjoinedtoastraightline
towardsthesignofAries.
InthistheoryanotherkabbalisticanalysisofourMonadoffers
itself,becausethetrueandingeniusexplanationisthis:the
exaltationsoftheMoonandoftheSunatemadebymeansofthe
scienceoftheElements.
Note.Therearetwothingswhichshouldbeparticularlyobserved:first,thatthehieroglyphicfigureof
TaurusisthesameasthediphthongoftheGreeks [i.e.ou],whichwasalwaysusedinterminatingthe
singulargendersecondly,thatbyasimpletranspositionofplaceweshowtheletteralphatwice,byacircle
andahalfcircle,beingsimplytangentswhichtouchoneanotherasshown.

THEOREMXVI
Wemustnow,inviewofoursubject,philosophiseforashorttimeupontheCross.OurCrossmaybeformed
oftwostraightlines(aswehavesaid)whichareequalonetotheotherthatistosay,wecannotseparatethe
linesexceptwedoitbypartingthemsothatwegetequallengths.Butinthemysticdistributionofthe
componentsofourCross,wewishtousepartswhicharebothequalandunequal.Thesepartsshowthata
virtueishiddenunderthepowerofthedivisionoftheEquilateralCrossintotwoparts,becausetheyareof
equalgrandeur.Ingeneral,theCrossmustbecomposedofequalrightangles,sincethenatureofjustice
demandstheperfectequalityofthelinesusedinthedecussation.Inaccordancewiththisjustice,wepropose
toexaminewithcarethatwhichfollowsconcerningtheEquilateralCross(whichisthetwentyfirstletterof
theLatinalphabet).
If,throughthecommonpointwheretheoppositeanglesmeetinourRectilineal,Rectangular,andEquilateral
Cross,weimagineastraightlinedividingitintotwoparts,thenoneithersideofthelinethustraversedwe
findthepartsareperfectlyequalandsimilar.AndthesepartsaresimilarinshapetothatletteroftheRomans
whichisregardedasthefifthofthevowels,andwhichwasfrequentlyusedbythemostancientLatin
philosopherstorepresentthenumberfive.

This,Iconceive,wasnotdonebythemwithoutgoodreason,becauseitisinfacttheexacthalfofourDecad.
OfthesepartsofthefigurethusduplicatedbythehypotheticaldivisionoftheCross,wemustconcludeitto
bereasonablethateachpartrepresentsthequinary,althoughoneisuprightandtheotherreversedinimitation
ofthemultiplicationofthesquarerootwhichcomesinhereinamarvellouswayasthecircularnumber,that
istosay,thequinary,fromwhichwefindthenumbertwentyfiveisproduced(becausethisletteristhe

twentiethofthealphabetandthefifthofthevowels).
WewillnowconsideranotheraspectofthissameEquilateralCrossthatwhichfollowsisbaseduponthe
positionshowninourMonadicCross.LetussupposeasimilardivisionoftheCrossintotwopartsbemade
asinthedrawing.

NowweseethegerminatingshapeofanotherletteroftheLatinalphabettheoneupright,theother
reversedandopposite.Thisletterisused(aftertheancientcustomoftheLatins)torepresentthenumber
fifty.Fromthis,itseemstome,weestablishourDecadoftheCross,forthisisplacedatthesummitofallthe
mysteries,anditfollowsthatthisCrossisthehieroglyphicsignofperfection.Therefore,enclosedwithinthe
quinaryforceisthepoweroftheDecad,outofwhichcomesthenumberfiftyasitsownproduct.
Oh,myGod,howprofoundarethesemysteries!andthenameELisgiventothisletter!Andforthisvery
reason,weseethatitrespondstothedecadalvirtueoftheCross,because,startingfromthefirstletterofthe
alphabet,Listhetenthletter,andcountingbackwardsfromtheletterX,wefindthatitfallsintothetenth
place,andsinceweshowthattherearetwopartsoftheCross,andconsideringnowtheirnumericalvirtue,it
isquiteclearhowthenumberonehundredisproduced.Andifbythelawofsquaresthesetwopartsbe
multipliedtogether,theygiveaproductof2500.Thissquarecomparedwiththesquareofthefirstcircular
number,andappliedtoit,givesadifferenceofonehundred,whichistheCrossitselfexplainedbythesquare
ofitsDecad,andisrecognisedasonehundred.Therefore,asthisiscontainedwithinthefigureoftheCross,
italsorepresentsunity.BythestudyofthesetheoriesoftheCross,themostdignifiedofall,wearethereby
inducedtoutilisethisprogression,viz.onetenonehundred,andthisisthedecadalproportionofthe
Crossasitappearstous.

THEOREMXVII
Afteraduestudyofthesixththeoremitislogicaltoproceedtoaconsiderationofthefourrightanglesinour
Cross,toeachoneofwhich,aswehaveshownintheprecedingtheorem,weattributethesignificanceofthe
quinaryaccordingtothefirstpositioninwhichtheyareplaced,andintransposingthemtoanewposition,
thesametheoremshowsthattheybecomehieroglyphicsignsofthenumberfifty.Itisquiteevidentthatthe
Crossisvulgarlyusedtoindicatethenumberten,andfurther,itisthetwentyfirstletter,followingtheorder
oftheLatinalphabet,anditisforthisreasonthatthesagesamongsttheMecubalesdesignatedthenumber
twentyonebythissameletter.Infact,wecangiveaverysimpleconsiderationtothissigntofindoutwhat
otherqualitativeandquantitativevirtuesitpossesses.Fromallthesefactsweseethatwemaysafely
conclude,bythebestkabbalisticcomputation,thatourCross,byamarvellousmetamorphosis,maysignify
fortheInitiatestwohundredandfiftytwo.Thus:fourtimesfive,fourtimesfifty,ten,twentyoneandone,
whichaddedtogethermaketwohundredandfiftytwo.Wecanextractthisnumberbytwoothermethodsas
wehavealreadyshown:werecommendtotheKabbalistswhohavenotyetmadeexperimentstoproduceit,
notonlytostudyitinitsconciseness,butalsotoformajudgmentworthyofphilosophersinregardtothe
variouspermutationsandingeniousproductionswhicharisefromthemagisteryofthisnumber.AndIwill
nothidefromyouafurthermemorablemystagogy:considerthatourCross,containingsomanyideas,
concealstwofurtherlettersifweexaminecarefullytheirnumericalvirtuesafteracertainmanner,sothat,by
aparallelmethodfollowingtheirverbalforcewiththissameCross,werecognisewithsupremeadmiration
thatitisfromherethatLIGHTisderived(LUX),thefinalwordofthemagistery,bytheunionand
conjunctionoftheTernarywithintheunityoftheWord.

FromourTheoremsXIIandXIIIitmaybeinferredthatcelestialastronomyisthesourceandguideofthe
inferiorastronomy.Beforeweraiseoureyestoheaven,kabbalisticallyilluminatedbythecontemplationof
thesemysteries,weshouldperceiveveryexactlytheconstructionofourMonadasitisshowntousnotonly
intheLIGHTbutalsoinlifeandnature,foritdisclosesexplicitly,byitsinnermovement,themostsecret
mysteriesofthisphysicalanalysis.Wehavecontemplatedtheheavenlyanddivinefunctionsofthiscelestial
Messenger,andwenowapplythiscoordinationtothefigureoftheegg.Itiswellknownthatallastrologers
teachthattheformoftheorbittraversedbyaplanetiscircular,andbecausethewiseshouldunderstandbya
hint,itisthusthatweinterpretitinthehieroglyphshown,whichconformsineverydetailwithallthathas
gonebefore.

Hereyouwillnotethatthemiserablealchemistsmustlearntorecognisetheirnumerouserrorsandto
understandwhatisthewaterofthewhiteofegg,whatistheoiloftheyokeofegg,andwhatwemeanby
calcinedeggshells.Theseinexpertimpostorsmustlearnintheirdespairtounderstandwhataremeantby
theseandmanyothersimilarexpressions.Herewehaveshownalmostalltheproportionswhichcorrespond
toNatureherself.ThisisthesameEagle'sEggwhichthescarabformerlybrokebecauseoftheinjurywhich
thecrueltyandviolenceofthisbirdcausedtotimidandprimitiveman,forthisbirdpursuedsomeofthem
whowererunningtothecavernwherethescarabdwelt,toimplorehisaid.Thescarabwonderedinwhat
mannerhealonecouldrevengesuchinsolence,and,beingofanardentcharacter,preparedtoaccomplishhis
purposebyconstancyanddetermination,forhewasshortofneitherpowernorintelligence.Thescarab
pursuedtheeagleresolutelyandmadeuseofthisverysubtletrick:heletfallhisordureinthebosomof
Jupiterwheretheeggwasdeposited,withtheresultthattheGodingettingridofitthrewtheeggtothe
ground,whereitwasbroken.Thescarabbythismethodwouldhavecompletelyexterminatedthewhole
familyofeaglesfromtheEarthhadnotJupiter,inordertoavoidsuchacalamity,resolvedthat,duringthat
partoftheyearwhentheeagleswatchovertheireggs,noscarabshouldcomeflyingnearthem.Therefore,I
counselthosewhoareilltreatedbythecrueltyofthisbird,thattheylearntheveryusefulartfromthesesolar
insects(Heliocantharis)wholiveconcealedandhiddenforverylongperiodsoftime.Bytheseindications
andsigns,forwhichtheyshouldbeverythankful,theythemselveswillbeabletotakevengeanceontheir
enemy.AndIaffirm(OKing!)thatitisnotAesopbutOedipuswhopromptsme,forhepresentedthese
thingstoworthysouls,andventuredforthefirsttimetospeakofthesesuprememysteriesofNature.Iknow
perfectlywellthattherehavebeencertainmenwho,bytheartofthescarab,havedissolvedtheeagle'segg
anditsshellwithpurealbumenandhaveformedtherebyamixtureofallafterwardstheyhavereducedthis
mixturetoayellowliquid,byanotableprocess,viz.byaceaselesscirculationjustasthescarabsrolltheir
ballsofearth.

Bythismeansthegreatmetamorphosisoftheeggwasaccomplishedthealbumenwasabsorbedduringa
greatmanyrevolutionsroundtheheliocentricorbits,andwasenvelopedinthissameyellowliquid.The
hieroglyphicfigureshownhere,ofthisart,willnotdispleasethosewhoarefamiliarwithNature.
Wereadthatduringtheearlycenturies,thisartwasmuchcelebratedamongstthemostseriousandancient
Philosophers,asbeingcertainanduseful.Anaxagorasperformedthemagisteryandextractedtherefroman
excellentmedicine,asyoumayreadinhisbook.
Hewhodevoteshimselfsincerelytothesemysterieswillseeclearlythatnothingisabletoexistwithoutthe
virtueofourhieroglyphicMonad.

WehaveshownsufficientlythatforverygoodreasonstheElementsarerepresentedinourHieroglyphbythe
straightlines,thereforewegiveaveryexactspeculationconcerningthepointwhichweplaceinthecentreof
ourCross.ThispointcannotbyanymeansbeabstractedfromourTernary.Shouldanyonewhoisignorantof
thisdivinelearning,saythatinthispositionofourBinarythepointcanbeabsent,wereply,hemaysuppose
ittobeabsent,butthatwhichremainswithoutitwillcertainlynotbeourBinaryfortheQuaternaryis
immediatelymanifested,becausebyremovingthepointwediscontinuetheunityofthelines.Now,our
adversarymaysupposethatbythisargumentwehavereconstructedourBinarythatinfactourBinaryand
ourQuaternaryareoneandthesamething,accordingtothisconsideration,whichismanifestlyimpossible.

Thepointmustofnecessitybepresent,becausewiththeBinaryitconstitutesourTernary,andthereis
nothingthatcanbesubstitutedinitsplace.MeanwhilehecannotdividethehypostaticpropertyofourBinary
withoutnullifyinganintegralpartofit.Thusitisdemonstratedthatitmustnotbedivided.Allthepartsofa
linearelines.Thisisapoint,andthisconfirmsourhypothesis.Therefore,thepointdoesnotformpartofour
BinaryandyetitformspartoftheintegralformoftheBinary.Itfollowsthatwemusttakenoticeofallthatis
hiddenwithinthishypostaticformandunderstandthatthereisnothingsuperfluousinthelineardimensionof
ourBinary.Butbecauseweseethatthesedimensionsarecommontobothlines,theyareconsideredto

WethereforecontinuetoexpoundtheQuaternaryofourCrossaswehaveindicated.Seekdiligentlyto
discoverwhetherthepointmayberemovedfromthepositioninwhichwefirstfindit.Themathematicians
teachthatitmaybedisplacedquitesimply.AtthemomentwhenitisseparatedtheQuaternaryremains,and
itbecomesmuchmoreclearanddistincttotheeyesofall.
Thisisnotapartofitssubstantialproportions,butonlytheconfusedandsuperfluouspointwhichisrejected
andremoved.
OOmnipotentDivineMajesty,howweMortalsareconstrainedtoconfesswhatgreatWisdomandwhat
ineffablemysteriesresideintheLawwhichThouhastmade!Throughallthesepointsandtheselettersthe
mostsublimesecrets,andterrestrialarcanemysteries,aswellasthemultiplerevelationsofthisuniquepoint,
nowplacedintheLightandexaminedbyme,canbefaithfullydemonstratedandexplained.Thispointisnot
superfluouswithintheDivineTrinity,yetwhenconsidered,ontheotherhand,withintheKingdomofthe
fourElementsitisblack,thereforecorruptibleandwatery.Othriceandfourtimeshappy,themanwho
attainsthis(almostcopulative)pointintheTernary,andrejectsandremovesthatsombreandsuperfluous
partoftheQuaternary,thesourceofvagueshadows.Thusaftersomeeffortweobtainthewhitevestments
brilliantasthesnow.
Oh,Maximilian!MayGod,throughthismystagogy,makeyouorsomeotherscionoftheHouseofAustria
themostpowerfulofallwhenthetimecomesformetoremaintranquilinChrist,inorderthatthehonourof
Hisredoubtablenamemayberestoredwithintheabominableandintolerableshadowshoveringabovethe
Earth.AndnowforfearthatImyselfshouldsaytoomuchIshallimmediatelyreturntotheburdenofmy
task,andbecauseIhavealreadyterminatedmydiscourseforthosewhosegazeiscentredwithintheheart,it
isnownecessarytotranslatemywordsforthosewhoseheartiscentredwithintheireyes.Here,therefore,we
canrepresentinsomemeasureinthefigureoftheCrossthatwhichwehavealreadysaid.Twoequallinesare
equallyandinequallycrossedthroughthepointofnecessitywhichyouseeinA.

Thefourstraightlines,asinB,produceasortofvacuumwheretheyarewithdrawnfromthecentralpoint,
whichwastheircommoncondition,inwhichstatetheywerenotprejudical,theonetotheother.Thisisthe
pathbywhichourMonad,progressingthroughtheBinaryandtheTernaryintothepurifiedQuaternary,is
reconstitutedwithinitself,unitedinequalproportions,andwhichnowshowsthatthewholeisequaltoits
combinedparts,forduringthetimethatthistakesplaceourMonadwillnotadmitofotherunitsornumbers,
becauseitisselfsufficient,andexactlyso,withinitselfabsoluteinallnumbersintheamplitudeofwhichit
isdiffused,notonlymagicallybutalsobyasomewhatvulgarprocessemployedbytheartist,whichproduces
greatresultsindignityandpowerwithinthisselfsameMonad,whichisresolvedintoitsownfirstmatter
whilstthatwhichisforeigntoitsnatureandtoitsnaturalhereditaryproportionsissegregatedwiththe

IfthatwhichishiddenwithintheprofunditiesofourMonadbebroughttolight,or,onthecontrary,if
thoseprimarypartswhichareexteriorinourMonadareenclosedinthecentre,youwillseethe
extenttowhichthephilosophicaltransformationcanbeproduced.Wewillnowexpoundtoyou
anotherlocalcommutationofourmysticalMonad,usingthosepartsfromthehieroglyphiccharacters
ofthesuperiorplanetswhichareimmediatelyofferedtous.Eachoneoftheotherplanetsforthis
purposeisinturnelevatedtoapositionwhichwasfrequentlyassignedtothembyPlato,therefore,if
theyareconvenientlytakeninthispositionandatthispointinAries,SaturnandJupiterareinconjunction.
Bydescending,theCrossrepresentsVenusandMercury,followedbytheSunhimselfwiththeMoonatthe
bottom.Thiswillberefutedinothercirclesmeantime,aswehavenowishtohidethephilosophicaltreasure
ofourMonad,wehavetakenaresolutiontogiveareasonbywhichthepositionoftheMonadisbythis
mannerdisplaced.Yetsee!listentotheseothergreatsecretswhichIknowandwilldisclosetoassistyouas
touchingthisposition,whichIcanexplaininfewwords.WedistributeourMonad,nowlookedatfroma
differentaspect,andanalysedinadifferentmanner,asisseenatB,D,C.InthisnewTernarythefiguresC
andDareknowntoallmen,butthefiguredesignatedBisnoteasyofcomprehension.

ItisnecessarytogivecarefulconsiderationtotheknownformsDandC,whichshowthattheessencesare
separatedanddistinctfromthefigureB:alsoweseethattheHornsofthefigureCareturneddownwards
towardstheEarth.ThatpartofDwhichilluminesCisalsotowardstheEarth,thatistosay,downwards,in
thecentreofwhichthesolitaryvisiblepointaloneistrulytheEarth:finallythesetwofiguresDandCturned
towardsthelowerendgiveahieroglyphicindicationoftheEarth.Therefore,theEarthismadetorepresent,
hieroglyphically,stabilityandfixation.IleaveyoutojudgefromthiswhatismeantbyCandD:fromwhich
youmaytakenoticeofagreatsecret.AllthequalitieswhichwehaveinthefirstplaceascribedtotheSun
andtheMooncanherebegivenaperfectandverynecessaryinterpretation,thesetwostarsuptonowhaving
beenplacedinthesuperiorpositionwiththehornsoftheMoonraisedonhighbutwehavealreadyspoken
ofthis.
Wewillnowexamine,accordingtothefundamentalsofourhieroglyphicArt,thenatureofthisthirdfigure
B.First,wecarrytotheCrownthedoublecrescentoftheMoonwhichisourAries,turnedroundina
mysticalmanner.ThenfollowsthehieroglyphicsignoftheElements,whichisattachedtoit.Astowhywe
usethedoubleMoon,itmaybeexplainedthatitisaccordingtothematter,whichrequiresadoublequantity
oftheMoon.WespeakofthosegradesofwhichintheirexperimentsthePhilosopherscouldfindnomore

youmanytimesthatinourtheorythehieroglyphoftheMoonislikeasemicircle,andonthecontrarythe
completecirclesignifiestheSun,whereasherewehavetwosemicirclesseparated,buttouchingatacommon
pointifthesearecombined,astheycanbebyacertainart,theproductcanrepresentthecircularplenitudeof

unitedinthesolarbody.Infact,thesemidiameterofthesehalfcirclesisnotequaltothesemidiameterofD
andC,butmuchsmaller.Everyonecanseethisfromthemannerinwhichwehavedrawntheminthe
diagram,fromwhichitisclearthatthissameBhasnotasgreatanamplitudeasDandC.Theproportionsin
thefigureconfirmthis,beingbythismeanstransformedintoacirclefromBintoE.Therefore,thereappears
beforeoureyesthesignofVenusalone.Wehavealreadydemonstratedbythesehieroglyphicalsyllogisms
thatfromBwecannotobtainthetrueD,andthatthetrueCisnotandcannotbecompletelywithinthenature
ofBtherefore,thisofitselfisnotabletobecomethetrue"ArgentVive."Youmayalreadydoubtthesubject
ofthislifeandofthismovement,whetheritispossible,infact,topossessitnaturallyornot.However,aswe
havealreadyexplainedtothewise,allthosethingswhicharesaidaboutB,inasimilarmannerwillbeat
leastanalogical,andallthatwhichwehavebrieflytaughtconcerningCandDcanbeverywellapplied,by
analogy,tothissameBaccompaniedbyitsElements.Indeed,thatwhichwehaveattachedtothenatureof
Aries,shouldexactlyfitthecase,becauseitcarriesthisfigureB,althoughreversed,atitssummit,andthat
whichisattachedtothefigureB,isthemysticalfigureoftheElements.Therefore,weseebythisanatomy
thatfromthebodyofourMonadalone,separatedinthismannerbyourArt,thisnewTernaryisformed.
Thiswecannotdoubt,forthereasonthatthememberswhichcomposeditreassembleandformamongst
themselvesoftheirownfreewillamonadicunionandsympathywhichisabsolute.Bythismeanswe
discoveramongstthesemembersaforcewhichisbothmagneticandactive.
FinallyIthinkitwelltonotehere,bywayofrecreation,thatthissameBshowsveryclearlythesame
proportionsinthemalformedandrusticletterinthatitcarriesvisiblepointstowardsthetopandatthefront

crudeandmalformed,unstableandinconstant,madeinsuchamannerastoappearformedofaseriesofhalf

Butthemethodofmakingtheselettersmorestableandfirmisinthehandsoftheliteraryexperts.Ihavehere
placedbeforeyoureyesaninfinitudeofmysteries:Iintroduceagamebuttointerruptatheory.MeanwhileI
donotunderstandtheeffortsofcertainpeoplewhoriseupagainstme.OurMonadbeingreconstitutedinits
firstmysticalpositionandeachoneofitspartsbeingorderedbyArt,Iadviseandexhortthemtosearchwith
zealforthatfireofAriesinthefirsttriplicity,whichisourequinoctialfireandwhichisthecausewhereby
ourSunmaybeelevatedabovehisvulgarquality.Manyotherexcellentthingsshouldalsobestudiedin

fromthislastletteroftheGreekalphabetnowrestoredtoitsprimitivemystagogy,andwhichismadebya
singletranspositionofitscomponentparts,consistingoftwohalfcirclesofequalsize.Concerningthevulgar
objectsandnecessitieswhicharerequiredinadditiontothevessels,andthematerialsoutofwhichthey
shouldbefashioned,itwouldbeuselessthatweshouldtreatofithere.Meanwhileamustbeconsideredasif
searchingfortheoccasiontoperformitsfunctionbyaverysecretandrapidspiralcirculationandan
incorruptiblesaltbywhichthefirstprincipleofallthingsispreserved,orbetter,thatthesubstancewhich
floatswithinthevitriolafteritsdissolution,showstheapprenticeaprimordialbutverytransitoryspecimenof

weretodemonstratethecausesbyanothermethodwhichwehavenotdone,althoughwehavedoneso
sufficientlyfortheSages,weshouldtranscendthelimitsofobscuritywhichwehaveprescribed,notwithout
reason,forourdiscourse.

inrespectofthepositionsMandNwhenerectingtheperpendicularateachoneofthesecentrepointswe
canusethesixthpartofABoralittleless,fromwhichpoint,asthecentre,wedescribetwoother
semicircles,usingtheradiusofthetwofirst,MCandNC.
Lastly,theparallelsmaybetracedateachsideofthetwolinesofourCross,eachsideatadistancefromthe
centrelineofoneeighthtoonetenthpartofthedistanceAB,insuchawaythatourCrossbeinthismanner
formedintofoursuperficiallineswherethewidthisthefourthorthefifthpartofthissamelineAB.
Ihavewishedinsomewaytosketchtheseornamentsinthefigurewhicheachonemay
reproduceaccordingtohisownfancy.Itisacondition,however,thatyoudonot
commitanyfault,howeversmall,againstthemysticalsymmetryforfearofintroducing
byyournegligenceanewdisciplineintothesehieroglyphicmeasurementsforitisvery
necessarythatduringthesucceedingprogressionintimetheymustbeneitherdisturbed
