SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION
Students Prior Knowledge:
- Familiar with some forms of ICT
- Connect numbers and names of numbers
- Compare, order and make correspondences
between collections of numbers
- Confidence with number sequences to and
from 1000
- Recognise, model, read write and orders
numbers
- Count collections to 1000 by partitioning
numbers using place value

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify place value by determining the number of ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands in a given number
Verbally repeat the displayed number students have made by
Correctly and appropriately use ICT equipment to work through place value activity
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:
- Charge metal detectors
- Fully charged iPads
- Make place value cards and laminate them
- Make sure iMovie is downloaded on iPads
- Check that everything works including the
interactive whiteboard

Provision for students at educational risk:

- Students with vision impairment require to sit
closer to the board and magnification
equipment for viewing task.
- Students with high functioning autism will work
with the teacher assistant to complete the
lesson and activities.
- Ensure the everyday teachers put behaviour
management into piece prior to the lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
A check list will be created to determine:
- If the students can say the number found.
- If the students can write the number found.
- Were the students working together as a group
- Did the students find the task helpful?
- Could the students understand the task and what they were supposed to do?
- Did the students find anything difficult? If so, how could this be improved next time?
- Were the lesson objectives met?
Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:
Anecdotal notes will be kept on:
- Did the students take interest in the lesson?
- Did the students learn from the activity?
- Were all students participating in the task?
- How can the lesson be improved?
- Did the students have any difficulties?

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Time

Motivation and Introduction:

8:30am

Stop, look and listen eyes on me, eyes on me. (Song is sung when children need
to stop what the are doing and give all of their attention to the teacher.)

Resources/References

I need you to move group by group down to the mat group one can you start first
please and once they have sat down can the next group please stand up tuck
their chairs in and move to the mat, can the rest of the groups please continue.
Teacher will introduce the lesson by letting students know that they will be
beginning the first of two lessons on place value.
8:35am

Teacher will play the YouTube clip on place value.

8:40am

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

- There will be numbers (2,14, 20, 143, 367 etc.) placed in different locations
outside.

8:45am

The students will be given metal detectors and an iPad to use in the activity
to make an iMovie in the next lesson with the numbers they find.

Students will be placed in groups of 4/5 people in each.

Students will have to take turns taking photos of the other group members
out searching for the numbers.

The students will have 20 minutes to find as many numbers as they can
with their metal detectors.

One student who is happy to volunteer him or her self will record the other
group members saying the numbers that they each individually found. Then

once they have had their turn one of the group members will take the iPad
off the student and record them saying the numbers they have found.
-

9:10am

9:20am

Once they have said the number that they found they would then say which
number is in the ones, tens or hundredths place value column. The person
that has the iPad will record the other group members.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

- Students will then have time to look over the photos and videos they have
taken and decided between them if they think they have collected enough
information or do they need to take more picture or videos and also
checking to make sure everything they have is all relevant information.
- Students will have the time to volunteer one member of their group to talk
about there place value hunt.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
- Students will be asked to pack away any equipment that they had out and make
sure it is put on charge. The students will return to the mat waiting for the sport
teacher to come and collect them.
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
-

The teacher will assess each of the groups using a checklist to mark off the
students that completed the task in the one lesson.
Checklist:
- Ability to determine the number of tens, ones, hundreds in a given number.
- Use correct mathematical language when repeating the value of a number
or whole numbers.
- Ability to use ICT effectively during place value activities.
