Last week-end, we heard and meditated on the

merits of the doubt that Saint Thomas the Apostle
had. Although we may wonder and even be upset
with Thomas for his incredulity, his doubt had
given Jesus the opportunity to bless those who
believed in Him and who unlike Thomas had not
or would not be able to check out the fact of
Jesus Resurrection.
In the Gospel this week-end, we see two
interesting stories. One that of His appearance and
miracle performed for the Apostles, who with
Peter had gone out to catch fish; and the other the
question that Jesus asked Peter three times and
the importance of Peters reply to Jesus.
In the First Reading Peter tells the early Christians,
that they must obey God rather than men. In the
Second Reading, the visions of Saint John about
Heaven, explain to us the significance of the
sacrifice of the Lamb of God. It is from this
narrative of John that we have a glimpse of the
Heavenly realities, of angels and animals and
worship. Let our hearts be filled with joy and
allegiance to the Risen Lord, because to Him
belong the Glory, the Power and the Kingdom.

St. Thomais of Lesvos

Patron Saint of Marriage

Egyptian martyr. St. Thomais was from the

island of Lesvos and born of pious and rich
parents. She was married at the age of 13 to a
fisherman in Alexandria, Egypt. She was an
ardent Christian who suffered abuse from
her husband and was murdered by her
father-in-law for refusing his unwanted and
illicit attentions.
Prayer of St. Thomais
St. Thomais, Your lived a troubled life, as a
devoted wife and Christian, yet you offered up
your life to Christ, and was blessed with
miracles, O Righteous one, and Faithful servan,
You are a divine example of marriage, we
praise you O Thomais, and faithfully cry out,
Hail pure maiden of the island of Lesvos.

2. The PARISH YOUTH/CONFIRMATION Group,
who will be confirmed on May 8th at the 5 PM
Mass, will have the Annual retreat at
Kokokahi this week-end. Please pray for them,
that they be faithful and strong in the practice
of their faith. At the 7 PM Mass, they will sign
their names in front of the Altar, as a sign of
their desire and commitment to be soldiers of
Jesus Christ and His Gospel of Love.

THE NATURE OF OUR CALLING
Whenever I read this Sunday's Gospel story, I have to wonder, how did Jesus catch the fish he
was barbecuing when the disciples came ashore? Did he have a net, too? Did he buy it in town
with the bread? If so, didn't anyone recognize him? Or maybe the fish just jumped out of the
water onto the fire! And maybe he turned stone into bread, like Satan had once tempted him to
do.
Reflect back upon the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fish. Same foods: bread and
fish. Same miracle! It does not matter how little we have or even whether we have anything at
all. God the Creator has an infinite supply and is able to produce an abundance of everything. It's
never based on what we have; it's always based on the love he has for us.
What he wants from us is the willingness to do the work of sharing what God provides. In the
miracle of feeding the crowd, the disciples were asked to distribute the multiplied food. In the
miracle of the huge catch of fish, the disciples were asked to "bring some of the fish you caught"
and add it to the meal that Jesus was already cooking.
Afterward, Peter was asked to share the love he had for Jesus with the "sheep". From where does
love come? Peter didn't love anybody by his own efforts; none of us do. Peter was created with
God's love already in him, as we all were, for we were made in the image of God who is love.
Peter's calling was to share the abundance of God's love, so that the kingdom of God could
continue to spread throughout the earth. What is God asking you to do? The answer does not lie
in what you have, but in what you are willing to do with what God already has.
QUESTIONS FOR PERSONAL REFLECTION:
What work for the kingdom of God (the parish, a friend, a community program) have you felt a
desire to do but haven't yet done because your net feels empty? Assume that Jesus is asking you
to do it; what action can you take this week that will toss your net over the other side of the boat?
QUESTIONS FOR FAMILY & COMMUNITY FAITH SHARING:
Are you doing everything you feel called by God to do? Share with your community a frustrated
calling, i.e., an unsuccessful or un-begun vocation. What does God have that you don't have that
could turn the dream into reality? Exchange ideas on how to avail yourself of God's abundance.
