Introduction
Thank you for purchasing this high quality OHAUS meter. Please read the manual completely
before using the STARTER 3100C bench conductivity meter to avoid incorrect operation.
The STARTER 3100C has an excellent performance/price ratio and are designed with many
useful features including stand-alone electrode holder, a beeper for error alert etc. You will find
much helpful functionality in the meter. A few of the many existing features are:
Backlight liquid crystal screen which make the display more clearly
Auto/manual endpoint which could help users freeze the stable reading value
RS232 can connect printer to print99 data memory with last calibration data

Safety measures
When using chemicals and solvents, comply with the instructions of the
producer and the general lab safety rules
Dry off any liquid spills immediately! The instrument is not watertight

Package contents
Units
In addition to ST3100C-B content, the ST3100C-F package also includes the following:
STCON3 conductivity electrode
In use cover
The best measurement range for STCON3 4-ring(4-pole) conductivity electrode is 70 S/cm200ms/cm. In this range the measurement accuracy is 0.5%.
Use STCON3 to measure cond. value which is between 1 S/cm to 70 S/cm, the accuracy is
about 5% to 1%.
Does not use STCON3 to measure cond. value less than 1 S/cm, the accuracy is very bad.

After adjust the tension knob to some extent, you can move up and down the upper arm
directly. When we put pH electrode on the arm, we can keep the storage bottle of pH
electrode in the base hole.
2.3
Insert the right adapter clip into the power adapter slot.
Ohaus balance power supply is also 12V which could also be used for the pH meter.

2.5
One unique design of the STARTER 3100C is the meter stand, which can be used to adjust the view
angle of the display in case of working on high lab table.
2.6
Another unique design of the STARTER 3100C is the attached quick guide, the quick guide is
attached into the bottom housing of the meter, you can use finger to pull it out.
3.1
Calibration
3.1.1
Selecting a standard
When using the STARTER 3100C conductivity meter, you have to select a standard for calibration
(see 4.3).
Press and hold the button-Mode enter setup mode, after press button-Read to confirm the
temperature unit and value. Then the current standard blinks. Use up or down buttons to select
the standard , press button-Read to confirm. Press button-Exit to leave the setup mode.
The three predefined standards are:
84 S/cm
1413 S/cm
12.88 mS/cm
Tables for automatic temperature compensation are programmed in the meter for each standard
(see appendix).
3.1.2
Performing a calibration
Place the conductivity sensor in the selected calibration standard and press Cal.
The calibration icon
and the measurement icon
appear on the display. The icon
is
blinking during calibration measurement. The meter reach endpoint according to the preselected
endpoint mode after the signal has stabilized or after pressing button-Read.
When the calibration is finished, the standard value is displayed and stored; the measurement
icon
To finish the calibration and return to the sample measurement, press button-Read. The cell
constant is then shown on the display for 3 seconds.
Endpoint Mode: We have two endpoint modes - auto endpoint and manual endpoint. By
pressing and holding button-Read, you can switch between the 2 endpoint modes.
o
To manually endpoint a measurement or calibration, you need to press buttonRead: the sample reading freezes, the endpoint stability icon
blinks 3 times
and freezes on the display.
o
When in auto endpoint mode, the meter judges if the reading is stable then
endpoint automatically, the reading freezes and blinks 3 times then disappears;
auto endpoint icons
blink 3 times and freeze on the display.
o
Stability criterion: the signal of the sensor input may not change by more than
0.1mV in 6 seconds.
To reject the calibration, press button-Exit .
Note:
To ensure the most accurate conductivity readings, you should verify your cell constant with a
standard solution once a day and recalibrate if necessary. Always use fresh standards.
For STCON3 the normal cell constant range is 1.00 2.00. (e.g. 1.71 /cm)
3.2
Sample measurement
Place the conductivity sensor in the sample and press button-Read to start the measurement. The
measurement icon
appears on the display. The measurement icon is blinking during
measurement and the display shows the conductivity of the sample.
When reach endpoints (auto endpoint or manual endpoint), you can record the result.
Stability criterion for conductivity measurement: The sensor input signal of the meter may not
change by more than 0.4% from the measured average conductivity of the probe in 6 seconds.
3.3
To perform a TDS or salinity measurement, follow the same procedure as for a conductivity
measurement. Press button-Mode to switch between conductivity and TDS measurement mode.
3.4
3.4.1
Storing a reading
Press button-Store when the measurement reaches endpoint. M01 indicates that one result
has been stored.
If you press button-Store when M99 is displayed, FUL displays to indicate the memory is full. To
store further data you will have to clear the memory. (See 3.4.3)
3.4.2
Press and hold button-Recall to recall the stored values from memory when the current
measurement reaches endpoint.
Press button-up or button-down to scroll through the stored results. R01 to R99 indicates
which result is being displayed.
Press button-Exit to exit.
3.4.3
Pressing button-up or button-down to scroll through the stored results until MRCL appears.

Printing
If a printer is connected to the STARTER 3100C, a print-out is automatically generated after each
end pointed measurement or calibration.
The format for the print-out following a Cond. measurement is:
End Point, Value, Temp., ATC/MTC
Auto EP, 68.8S/cm, 26.8C , ATC
Ref.25C , T.Comp.Coeff. 2.00%/C
The details for the second line are:

display. Use up or down buttons to switch between C and F. Press button-Read to confirm your
selection. Continue with reference temperature setting or press button-Exit to go back to the
measurement screen.
Note: C = 5/9 (F -32)
4.2
After the temperature unit setting, the meters goes to setup manual temperature compensation.
(MTC). Use up or down buttons to increase or decrease the temperature correction value. Press
button-Read to confirm your setting. Continue with calibration standards setting or press buttonExit to go back to the measurement screen.
4.3
After the MTC setting, the meters goes to setup calibration buffer. Use up or down buttons to

confirm your setting. Continue with temperature correction coefficient setting or press button-Exit
to go back to the measurement screen.
4.4
After the calibration standard setting, the meter goes to the temperature correction coefficient
setting. Use up or down buttons to increase or decrease the temperature correction value(0.00 to
10.00 %/C). Press button-Read to confirm your setting. Continue with reference temperature
setting or press button-Exit to go back to the measurement screen.
Note:
If you set the temperature correction coefficient value as 0 %/C , that means NO Temperature
Compensation for the conductivity measurement. The meter displays the real conductivity value
at current temperature.
4.5
After confirming the temperature correction coefficient, the reference temperature appears on the
display. Use up or down buttons to switch between 25 C and 20 C (77F and 68F). Press
button-Read to confirm your selection. Continue with TDS factor setting or press button-Exit to go
back to the measurement screen.
4.6
After selecting the reference temperature, the current TDS factor blinks. Use up or down buttons
to increase or decrease the value. Press button-Read to confirm your setting. The meter will exit
automatically to the measurement screen.

Self diagnosis
Press and hold Read and Cal simultaneously until the meter displays the full screen. Each icon
blinks one after the other. This way you may check whether all icons are correctly shown. The
next step is to check that the keys are functioning correctly. This requires user interaction.
When b blinks, five icons are displayed. Press the 6 keys in any order. Each time you press a key
an icon disappears from the screen, continue to press the other keys until all the icons have
disappeared.
When the self-diagnosis has been completed successfully, PAS appears. If self-diagnosis fails,
error message Err 1 appears .
Note:
You have to finish pressing all five keys within two minutes, otherwise Err 1 appears and you will
have to repeat the procedure.
