Description of Activities and Setting

Good morning class, remember when Mrs. Little had a station
last week centered around famous people in NC and we read
paragraphs about certain people and filled out a chart? Yes.
Do you remember why those people were important?
Example answers: They helped settle NC, they were lawyers
or governors, and they fought in the war. Can anyone name

3. Teacher Input

Today you all are going to work in groups of three to conduct

research about of these six people. At the end of the lesson,
you are going to use Chatter pix to create a representation of
your person and explain how they contributed to North
Carolina.
The teacher will ask the students to form groups of three. She
will ask the students to appoint one person in their group as
the recorder (or writer), one person as the researcher, and
one person as the speaker and explain what each job entails.
She will hand out a piece of notebook to writer and an iPad to
the researcher. The teacher will turn on the Doc cam so the
students can see an outline of steps they need to complete
for this activity. So Im going to give each group member a
person and you are responsible for writing a paragraph of
details about this persons life on your paper. Your group must
have at least 7 facts about your person written in paragraph
form on your paper. The teacher will read aloud the first set
of directions for those students who need to hear the
instructions.
People: Daniel Boone, John Lawson, John Motley Morehead,
William R. Davie, William Henry Singleton, Winifred Marshall
Gales

4. Guided Practice

5. Independent
Practice

Teacher pulls up Kiddle on her iPad and places it under the

Doc Cam. She demonstrates how to search for information
going through Kiddle (and not Google), which websites were
the best for collecting information (ones that have bullet
points and pictures) and how to write the information you find
in your own words.
For the independent practice, students will research their
specific person. The teacher will be roaming around the room,
checking in on groups and seeing if they need help. She will
have to make sure the students arent copying directly from
the website but that they are paraphrasing the information
and putting it into their own words. She will read the
paragraphs each group has (making sure they wrote down
important information) before allowing them to create a

Chatter Pix.
Once you are finished, you may start your Chatter Pix.
