Ship Stability
Lecture 4
Dr. Arwa Hussein

GZ CURVES
GZ is the lever that occurs when the ship heels ,the GZ lever is responsible
for returning the ship back to the up right condition.

the length of GZ lever depends on two parameters ,

Gm & angle of heel.
GZ = GM * SIN

1.From the below GZ curve find the following:

Range of stability.
GZ maximum
Original GM
Angle of vanishing stability
The angle after which the ship loses stability

4/10/2016

For the above ship, if a weight of 90 ton is

moved transversely 15 m which caused the
ship to heel 15 degrees. Find the displacement
of the ship.

When the ship in last problem4 was even keel

( =0.0) , a 90 ton weight is suspended a
rope of length 10 m. what is the reduction in
the GM due to the suspended weigh effect.
What is the final GM.

Influences of movement of G.C on curve of static

stability
1. Vertical movement (usually due to the correction of G.C
position after inclining experiment.)

G1Z1 = GZ GG1 sin

1.From the below GZ curve find the following:

Original GM
Angle of vanishing stability
The angle after which the ship loses stability
If the Kg is increased 2 m, find the initial GM,
Angle of vanishing stability
