Films used by the Nazis to help spread their antisemitic ideology and psychologically prepare the
German people for the extermination of European Jewry. In late 1938, the German Propaganda
Ministry asked the country's film companies to begin making movies with antisemitic content. In
1939 two antiJewish films were produced, which used comedy to make fun of the Jews and
portray them as sub-human. During 1940, three anti-Jewish movies appeared in Germany. The
first to come out was Die Rothschilds (The Rothschilds). The subject of this film was the
Rothschilds, a wealthy Jewish family of bankers who originally came from Germany. The
German propagandists attempted to portray Jews as greedy parasites who suck in more and more
of the world's money while others die for their country (Germany) on the battlefield. The film
was unsuccessful in the theaters and was withdrawn soon after its premier. The next antisemitic
film was called Jued Suss (Jew Suss), which told the story of an eighteenth century banker
named Suss Oppenheimer who served as a financial advisor to a German duke. Oppenheimer is
depicted as a horrible person who rapes the blonde Aryan heroine, while the other Jews in the
film are dirty, immoral, and ugly. Ultimately, Oppenheimer is arrested and executed. Unlike The
Rothschilds, this film was wildly successful. SS chief Heinrich Himmler ordered all members of
the SS and police to see it. It was also shown to concentration camp guards, who were then
spurred on to treat their Jewish prisoners as the sub-humans portrayed in the film. The third and
most despicable of the three propaganda films was Der ewige Jude (The Eternal Jew). This film
was touted as a documentary, which supposedly "revealed" the Jews to be filthy and parasitic
leeches who thus deserve to be wiped out. The producers "proved" their claims with maps and
statistics, and closed with "footage" of a Jewish ritual murder, perpetrating the medieval lie that
Jews use the blood of Christian children on Passover.
Long recognized as historys most incendiary film, Jud Sss was the cultural centerpiece in
Joseph Goebbels campaign against the Jews. Released in 1940, it was a box office sensation
across Germany and Europe; alongside the movies theatrical distribution, it became a staple of
Nazi propaganda evenings organized by the Hitler Youth, SS and others.
On September 30,1940 Reichsfhrer SS, Heinrich Himmler, ordered all SS and police members
to see the film during the coming winter. It was shown to SS units, and Einsatzgruppen about to
be sent east on their murderous assignment, and was also sent to non-Jewish populations of areas
where Jews were about to be deported, by 1943 viewership of the film was reported as over 20.3
million people.

Veit Harlan, received the 1943 Universum Film Archiv award, but after the war his notoriety
faded. Harlan was the only film director of the Third Reich to be tried for crimes against
humanity. The prosecutors choosing to focus on his use of the SS to recruit (persuade) ghetto
Jews to perform as extras.

Harlan was determined to depict German Jews as Eastern Jews to justify their expulsion from
Germany, Harlan sought extras first in Lublin in January 1940, but later settled on Jews from the
Prague ghetto. Harlan was later acquitted on all counts.

Summary of the storyline and plot of the film Jud Sss

Duke Karl Alexander of Wrttemberg takes an oath to the constitution as he begins his
reign, promising to do everything "according to old Wrttemberg loyalty and honesty." But
shortly after becoming duke, he wants to hold his own with neighboring sovereigns, and
demands a personal guard, an opera, and a ballet.

The provincial council, headed by Counselor Sturm, turns down the duke's demands. But
he knows what to do. He sends Herr von Remchingen, a practiced courtier, to Frankfurt to find
the Jew Sss Oppenheimer, who sees his chance. Like a thief, he sneaks across the Wrttemberg
border and shows the duke how to make money. "Does not the emperor in Vienna have his
financial advisers, whom he allows to collect taxes, customs duties, and bridge tolls?"

The citizens of Wrttemberg complain, but the small rebellions that break here and there
against the steadily growing taxes and crude methods of the Jew's officials are brutally
suppressed. The smith Hans Bogner is hanged because, driven to desperation by the Jew and his
lackeys, he answers force with force. The duke is satisfied with his Jew. Sss transforms
Wrttemberg into a land "flowing with milk and honey."

He finds new ways to finance the duke's expensive tastes, and Sss himself gets rich too.
Karl Alexander rewards the Jew for his matchmaking services with new privileges and with a
letter giving him immunity from the law. The ban on Jews is lifted. Hundreds of Jews move to
Wrttemberg and Sss makes sure that they can all get rich.

Rder, the duke's war comrade, attempts in vain to make himself the spokesman for the
ruined farmers and citizens. Karl Alexander brusquely rejects him. The old Rabbi Loew, who

knows how to read the stars, vainly warns Sss Oppenheimer: "The Lord punishes Jews who
forget who they are!"

Sss continues on his way, even attempting to marry Dorothea, the daughter of Counselor
Sturm, who is engaged to Faber. Sturm stops him, and Faber and Dorothea are married. Under
the pretext that Sturm is leading a conspiracy against the duke, Sss has him arrested.

When the council resists the duke's arbitrary use of power, he dissolves it, thus breaking
the oath he took upon becoming duke. Following the advice of the Jew, he determines on a coup
to make himself the absolute monarch.
This forces Sss's opponents to act. Until then they had hesitated, but now they must
rouse the people. They send Faber out with secret orders. He is arrested at the city gate. The
password has been changed that night. Faber is accused of treason. Since he will not reveal is
accomplices, he is tortured.

Afraid, Dorothea goes to the Jew. Sss releases Faber. But at what price? A few hours
after his release, Faber carries the body of his young wife from the Neckar River.

Now rebellion breaks out! Rder is the leader. The duke, who would gladly be out of the
situation that Jew Sss has got him into, uses the presence of the emperor's emissary in
Ludwigsburg to leave Stuttgart, giving Sss a free hand to carry out the coup.
He dies of a heart attack during the festivities at Ludwigsburg, which renders void his grant of
immunity that gave the Jew immunity for all his crimes. Sss is arrested as he tries to escape.
He is tried and condemned to death. The smith's relatives build the highest gallows ever
constructed for the Jew. And all Jews have to leave the province within a month.

No single target of nazification took higher priority than Germany's young. By 1937, 97%
of all teachers belonged to the National Socialist Teachers' Union. Every member of this
union had to submit an ancestry table in triplicate with official documents of proof.
Courses and textbooks in Nazi schools reflected the aims of Hitler. Of the topics that
teachers were required to treat, the most important was racial theory and, by extention, the
Jewish problem. In The National Socialist Essence of Education, a German educator wrote
that mathematics was "Aryan spiritual property; .. an expression of the nordic fighting
spirit, of the nordic struggle for the supremacy of the world..."[1] An example of racial
propaganda in a math problem is the following: "The Jews are aliens in Germany--in 1933
there were 66,060,000 inhabitants in the German Reich, of whom 499,682 were Jews. What
is the per cent of aliens?"[2]

In the introduction to Die Judenfrage im Unterricht , which was published in 1937 by Der
Strmer, Julius Streicher made the following statement: "The National Socialist state
requires its teachers to teach German children racial theory. For the German people, racial
theory means the Jewish problem."[3] The teacher's manual on the Jewish problem
maintains that German children have an inborn aversion to Jews that is intensified by
references made to Jews in the newspapers, conversations, and songs sung by members of
the SA and HJ. Intermarriage between Germans and Jews is portrayed as unnatural
because it does not follow the Nazi perversion of the natural biological order, which does
not allow for intermixing. Storks mate with storks; swallows mate with swallows, etc. The
Nuremberg Laws are depicted as a return to the natural order that God intended, and the
Jew is thus shown as a threat to God's order.
From this point, the projection of the Jew as an enemy of the German people is a quick
and easy step. He is conveyed as an infiltrator, who, upon gaining entry into German
society, has usurped the political and economic power of Germany and focused his
attention upon the destruction of the German people. Because the Jew is deemed such a
threat to German society, the Nuremberg Laws are viewed as a justifiable means of selfdefense. In order to make the status of the Jew as a deadly enemy of everything German as
concrete as possible to German children, the teacher's guide suggests that pictures of Jews
(which, of course, are ugly or distorted) be posted on the board next to pictures of the ideal
German type. From the visual differences, other differences are inferred. "The Jews walk
differently than we do. They have flat feet. They have longer arms than we do. They speak
differently than we do."[4]
From physical differences, it is an easy jump to more important differences. The thoughts,
feelings, and actions of the Jew are presented as a contradiction and threat to German morality.
In contrast to the honest German farmer or worker, the Jew is depicted as someone who lives off
the sweat of others by his swindling activities as a lawyer, a merchant, or a banker, whose god is
money. The Jew as a swindler is shown in the following picture by a twelve-year-old girl.[5] In
the drawing, the Jewish livestock dealer's attention appears focused on the bag of money; his
clothes are tattered and he is ill-kempt. The German farmer, by contrast, although giving the

appearance of being exhausted, is adequately groomed. Finally, being Jewish is, by extention, a
Christ-killer and is, therefore, deemed a crime. Jesus is viewed as a war hero who waged war
against the Jews until he was killed by them. Children were provided with slogans to learn and
recite such as: "Judas the Jew betrayed Jesus the German to the Jews."[6]

Juden Raus! is a race game that instills the values of a totalitarian fascist regime. It has both
the theme of racial hatred and employs racist images in the game design. The object of the game
is to deprive the German Jews of their property and to make them leave the city. The game board
clearly states that the first player to remove six Jews from the city wins the game. In this way the
game clearly foreshadows the policy of racial genocide that was to follow.
