Activity Plan Ch. 8

Domain: Prefixes
game

Activity Plan: Assimile

Goal: Students will practice adding prefixes to base words to make a

different word. They will comprehend how prefixes are added to words,
and how it changes the word to mean something different.
Objective: TEK: (1)(A) Students will use their knowledge and skills of
the relationships between letters and sounds, spelling patterns, and
morphological analysis to decode written English. (iv) Using knowledge
of common prefixes and suffixes (e.g., dis-,-ly)
Procedures: This game is modeled after Monopoly.
1. Place base words facedown around the board, one in each space.
A particular prefix is chosen as the focus and place face-up in the
center of the board. Chance cards are also placed in the middle.
2. Players roll the dice to see who goes first. The player with the
higher number rolls again and moves that number of spaces on
the board.
3. After landing on a particular space, the player turns up a word
card and must determine whether this word can be assimilated
to the prefix in the center of the board. If the card can be made
into a word, the player attempts to both say the word and
correctly spell it. A player who is able to correctly spell the word
gets to keep the card. If the word cannot be assimilated, it is kept
on the board face-up (this word will not be played again).
However, if the word can be assimilated but the player misspells
the word, the card is turned back over to be played later in the
game.
4. A player who is unable to come up with a word (for whatever
reason) forfeits a turn, and play moves to the next player.
5. When a player passes Go or lands on a card that is face-up, he
or she can draw from the chance pile. Chance cards provide
players a chance to think of their own assimilated prefix word
using the base word on the card and any assimilated prefix.
6. The game is over when all cards that can be played are played.
The winner is the player with the most correctly spelled words.
Materials: Dice, game board laid out like Monopoly, game playing
pieces, a deck of base words that can take assimilated prefixes, a deck
of prefixes that can be assimilated, and a deck of chance cards.
Simplification/Extension: For simplification, I would use a deck of
base words and a deck of prefixes that are smaller words and easier to

assimilate. For extension, I would use a deck of base words and a deck
of prefixes that are longer words and harder to assimilate.

Monopoly Assimile Game Instructions

Set up
Set the game board up and place the base words face down on each
space around the board. Pick a one prefix and place it in the center of
the board.

Who goes first?

Every player rolls the dice, and the person with the highest number
plays first. They will roll the dice again to determine how many places
they will move their game piece on the board.

How to play
After landing on a particular space, the player turns up a word card and
must determine whether this word can be assimilated to the prefix in
the center of the board. If the card can be made into a word, the player
attempts to both say the word and correctly spell it. A player who is
able to correctly spell the word gets to keep the card. If the word
cannot be assimilated, it is kept on the board face-up (this word will
not be played again). However, if the word can be assimilated but the
player misspells the word, the card is turned back over to be played
later in the game.
A player who is unable to come up with a word (for whatever reason)
forfeits a turn, and play moves to the next player.
When a player passes Go or lands on a card that is face-up, he or she
can draw from the chance pile. Chance cards provide players a chance
to think of their own assimilated prefix word using the base word on
the card and any assimilated prefix.
The game is over when all cards that can be played are played. The
winner is the player with the most correctly spelled words.
