The Houston Post's article on 1988 discusses the Gallaudet University was going to have the first deaf president in 124 years of history. I. King Jordan was exited for the change made. Unfortunately, Elizabeth Ann Zinser, who was not deaf was elected as the president but resigned after protest by the students. Jane Bassett Spliman who was in charged in handling the protest was replaced by Philip W. Bravin. Bravin came out with a solution that, the deaf will be the majority in the board of trustees and no reprisals against the protesters. Jordan who had at point towards the protest, supported the selection of Elizabeth Ann Zinser as the universitys president in the earlier election. However, Jordan reversed his position the next day in support of the protest.
