Leadership Philosophy

Vision: My vision is to build a culture of confidence and professionalism for delivery of holistic
person centered integrated care in the outpatient setting of professional community nursing
services that will support the demand for growth into community health. This will be
accomplished by introducing structure for educational opportunities to support succession
planning for both personal and professional growth of nurses in the outpatient setting to promote
leadership and empower nurses in the community to develop meaningful relationships across the
continuum of care. As a leader I will be obligated to remain open minded and embrace change in
order to stay informed and maintain professional practice standards.
Mission: My intention is to be a transformational leader with the ability to generate interest and
meaning to community nursing in a manner that motivates others with the ability to overcome
obstacles that impede change through recognition of strengths and empowerment.
Values: It is important to identify the key values necessary to create the envisioned culture.

Integrity: I strive to portray strong moral character through genuine development of

reliable, fair and consistent actions. This will be a reciprocal expectation across the
organization, of myself and others.
Trust: This is the core of any meaningful and productive relationship. Trust must be
earned and should never be violated. If the ability to trust others becomes diminished, the
vision will not be successful.
Social Responsibility: Social responsibility includes a holistic perspective and global
view recognizing that one part represents the whole. Social responsibility opens doors for
relationships and can help create trust in the individual and the organization.
Commitment: Commitment to the vision must be sincere. Commitment to the vision
includes investment in the purpose and the people involved. The leader must demonstrate
commitment in order to generate and maintain interest in others.
Transparency: Transparency allows leadership to organize and provide structure to the
team by using each others strengths in areas where others may demonstrate weakness.
Such disclosure facilitates opportunities for team building.
Respect: Respect is most meaningful when it is earned. Individuals always do more than
is expected when they know they are appreciated and respected. It is the leaders
responsibility to demonstrate and promote respect; in doing so it will be earned from
others.

Leadership Goals: My leadership goals include embracing the state of change in healthcare
today, and commit to generating interest in the area of growth in community health. This will
promote nursing leadership and empower nurses in the community to develop meaningful
relationships with the patient, health care teams and professional community organizations to
promote evidence based practice interventions through a holistic integrated model of care.

Implementation of philosophy:
In order for the vision and goals to be fulfilled, three principles must be implemented:

The first principle is to conduct research and become an expert on established models of
care to build a solid foundation for the identified change, and build upon them as a shared
vision with other professionals. Attention to social policy across the continuum of care.
Identification of immediate needs and commitment fulfill the gaps in care is necessary for
developing relationships.
The second principle is establishing trust and respect among the team, to promote a
culture of safety where people are fee to exchange ideas and share feedback for continued
growth. It will be my priority to earn a trustworthy reputation, and lead by example.
The final principle is to demonstrate authenticity and transparency with the shared vision.
It needs to be clear to everyone involved that they are an integral part of the process. For
that to happen there needs to be a certain degree of vulnerability to increase awareness of
each others strengths and weaknesses to build a collaborative integrated team with the
ability and courage to successfully navigate the changes.

Personal growth plan:

I plan to continue my membership with the American Holistic Nurses Association
(AHNA) and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), as I feel they help keep me
connected to my true passion and interest in nursing. I hope to take a more active role within the
organizations. I have also contemplated board certification in both areas, I would start with the
Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Certification (PMH BC).
I have become familiar with the Association of Nurse Executives (AONE) and have
considered joining the local Finger Lakes Chapter (FLONEL). The reason for my interest in this
organization is further development and advancement of the nursing profession and advocacy for
programs I am passionate about. As a nurse leader I feel it is my responsibility to be actively
engaged and a contributing voice.
I will continue to monitor current issues in healthcare through professional journals and
conferences that are relevant to my area of interest. I also plan to take part in any mentoring
programs as they arise. I will also continue to strive for balance in my life and maintain my
personal core values as I grow and move forward both personally and professionally.
