1. Scope
The purpose of a bridge navigational watch alarm system
( BNWAS) is to monitor bridge activity and detect operator disability
which could lead to marine accidents.
The system monitors the awareness of the Officer of the Watch
(OOW) and automatically alerts the Master or another qualified OOW
if for any reason the OOW becomes incapable of performing the
OOWs duties.
This purpose is achieved by a series of indications and alarms to
alert the first OOW and, if he is not responding, then to alert the
Master or another qualified OOW.
Additionally, the BNWAS may provide the OOW with means of
calling for immediate assistance if required.
The BNWAS should be operational whenever the ships heading or
track control system is engaged, unless inhibited by the Master.

3. Operational modes
For project 5006 it is used BNWAS BR-500 from Furuno.
This BNWAS should incorporate the following operational
modes:
Manual OFF: The BNWAS is inactive. Use this mode when
entering or just leaving harbor. No reset is necessary.
Manual ON: The BNWAS is active. Use this mode when the
vessel is travelling on the open sea. Reset is necessary to
continue operation.
AUTO: The BNWAS is active or inactive according to the
autopilot state. BNWAS is ON when the autopilot is ON; OFF
when the autopilot is OFF.

7. Remarks
IMO MSC.86 (May 2009), under SOLAS decided to make the
BNWAS mandatory for all ships of 150 GT and upwards, engaged in
international voyage, and passenger ships irrespective of size,
constructed on or after 1 July 2011, also engaged in international
voyage, shall be fitted with the BNWAS which shall be in operation
when the ship is underway at sea. All ships need to be fitted with
BNWAS before July 2015.
In vessels other than passenger vessels, the second or third
stage remote audible alarms may sound in all the locations at the
same time. If the second stage audible alarm is sounded this way,
the third stage alarm may be omitted.
In larger vessels, the delay between the second and the third
stage alarms may be set to a longer value on installation, up to a
maximum of 3 min, to allow sufficient time for the back-up officer
and/or Master to reach the bridge.
8. 5006 - BNWAS
BNWAS for 5006 includes
Main alarm panel console zone.
Processor unit console zone.
Timer reset button :
Allarm buzzers :
9. Conclusions
The purpose of BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm
System) is to monitor bridge activity and detect operator
disability that could lead to marine accidents.
A watch officer is required to press the button on a Timer
Reset Panel or to operate navigation equipment (e.g. ECDIS,
Radar, etc.) at certain intervals. Otherwise, visual and audible
alarms will be generated in the wheelhouse and in other
sections of the vessel.
