Gear Lesson 2

68 min
GLO: 4-6 Demonstrate a practical understanding of wheels, gears and
levers by constructing devices in which energy is transferred to
produce motion.

SLOs:

4. Explain the operation of a drive system that uses one or more of the
following: gears.
5. Construct and explain the operation of a drive system that transfers
motion from one shaft to a second shaft, where the second shaft is:
parallel to the first and at a 90 angle to the first.
Materials: One good side paper, gears, nails, cardboard, Funny bricks
set (2), ipads or laptops.
Resources: Alberta program of studies, http://www.smartkit.com/s5042/connect-it-gear-game/
Activities:
First, refresh students memory with a quick recap of what we
learned last period. (what a gear is, what it is used for, what a
driver gear is, the speed of big and slow gears when put together
etc.). Explain to students each station they will be attending. (5
min).
Get students started in stations. Station 1: Give students time
to play around with gears at their desks. During this time, they
must create a system of 5 gears (one driver, one driven, and 3
idling). The gears must go biggest to smallest on their board.
Student will need to trace their train of gears and when the
biggest one is the driver, draw an arrow to show the direction of
all gears, label the driver, driven, and idling gears, write down
how many revolutions the little gears do when the big gear
makes 1 revolution. Station 2: Students will have time to play
around with the Funny Bricks kits and experiment with bevelled
gears. Station 3. Students will be playing a game involving
gears on the ipad. The object is to create the right path of gears
in order to pull two chains together. At each station students will
be given 15 minutes. Backup- give me the gears worksheet if
laptop game doesnt work.
Assessment:
Formative: Observation- Make sure students are on task and
understanding the material for the duration of class. I will make sure to
spend a bit of extra time at the Funny Bricks station to ensure students

are experimenting with gears at 90 degrees as well as the parallel

gears.
Summative: I will collect the sheets they traced/labeled their gears on
and give them a mark out of twelve.
Extra time activity: Students may pair up with their pulley partner and
share what they learned that class and which they thought was the
best activity.

Directions for the Gear Station:

1.
Put your name at the top of the
paper.
2.
Place a One good side paper
between the cardboard and your
gears.
3.
Create a gear system with 5 gears
using: 1 big gear, 3 medium gears
and 1 small gear.
4.

Trace the gears using a pencil.

5.
Label the Driver Gear, Idling
gears and the Driven Gear
6.
Draw arrows to represent which
way each gear is turning

7.
Write down how many revolutions
the driven gear makes when the
driver gear turns around once.
*Hint- Your answer should look like this:
When the driver gear makes one complete
revolution, the driven gear makes ________________
revolutions.
