Upon conquering Israel under the leadership of Joshua, each of the
12 tribes was designated an individual territory in the land. The
tribe of Levi was not given territory for it was set apart from the
other tribes to serve in the Temple.

Northeast Region Natural Resources

Farming
People in the northern part of the region grow potatoes,
blueberries and cranberries.
They also use greenhouse to grow flowers and shrubs.
Southern, farming is a large industry where corn and
vegetables are major crops.
The inland hills and valleys provide pasture grasses for dairy
cows.

Mining
Every state in the region has stone quarries. A quarry is a large,
open pit cut into the ground , which stone is mined. Quarries in
the region produce a large amount of granite and marble that
people use to make buildings, bridges , roads and statues.

FISHING
Fishing is an important industry for people living along the coast.
The Atlantic Ocean provides cod , haddock, and plenty of oysters
and lobsters.
People also catch freshwater fish in the regions many lakes and
rivers.

CLIMATE
The Northeast has a varied landscape and a climate with four
seasons.

PEOPLE
Over the years, people came to the Northeast from countries
around the world. Today more than 65 million people live in
the Northeast. Most people live in cities and many others live in
suburbs.
The resources of the region create many jobs. One of the most
important is the Atlantic Ocean because is full of fish.
Manufacturing also provides jobs for many people in the
Northeast. Most of the goods they make are small, like clocks
and books. And there are companies that make airplanes and
other big machines.
