Children who go untreated medically will not be able to reach his or her academic
potential.
It is ideal that if a student is chronically sick, that the parent or health provider of
the child administer the medication.
But since most medication needs to be administrated during the day at school a
health care worker at the school will administer the medicine.
Unless the school has permission from the students parents, they arent allowed
to deliver medicine, parents permission is required.
In Texas, at the beginning of each school year parents are provided with a
handbook that lays out all regulations and policies on medication.
Sometimes, the health provider at schools will have to make a schedule with the
students health physician.
According to the Individual with Disabilities Education Act, says that school
districts must provide health services to students with disabilities.
The Individual with Disabilities Act is also a federal law.
Staff of the school district are immune to civil liability if the school district has
received documentation from the parent of the student, saying that it is okay for
them to administer the medication.
School employees are not allowed to give out personal medication such as Advil,
only prescription medication given to the school by parents are allowed.
Acts of gross negligence are not protected by civil liabilities.
If nurses are unsure of what gross negligence in the administration of medication
is, should consult the Texas Nursing Practice Act.
All medications are able to produce undesirable effects.
Any medication administrated in a Texas school must have written consent from a
parent or guardian.
On the written request must have: the students name, the name of the medication,
the date that is allowed to start being administrated and how many days it is
supposed to be given out for and finally the signature of the parent.
Medication must come in the original container that comes from the pharmacy.
What must be on the container is the name and address of the pharmacy, name of
the person who is supposed to be taking the medication, name of the doctor who
is prescribing the medication, date that the prescription is dispensed, Instructions
for use, and expiration of medication.
Many school nurses will want the following information: emergency contact, the
students diagnosis, any special requirements for the medication, if theres any
serious reactions, any allergies to any other medications.
It is recommended that medication no longer than a month stay on campus.

This guideline book was very helpful for the reason that it is applied to the state of Texas,
where I currently reside, also, it states all regulations and what is required for medication
in school, it also says how to give out medication.
