Backbiting&Slandering:
Allaahsays(interpretationofthemeaning):

"Neitherbackbiteoneanother.Wouldoneofyouliketoeatthefleshofhisdeadbrother?Youwouldhateit
(sohatebackbiting).AndfearAllaah.Verily,AllaahistheOneWhoforgivesandacceptsrepentance,Most
Merciful"[alHujuraat49:12]

ItwasnarratedfromAbuHurayrah(mayAllaahbepleasedwithhim)thattheMessengerofAllaah(peace
andblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)said:
"Doyouknowwhatgheebah(backbiting)is?"
Theysaid,"AllaahandHisMessengerknowbest."
He(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)said,"Sayingsomethingaboutyourbrotherthathe
dislikes."
Itwassaid,"WhatifwhatIsayaboutmybrotheristrue?"
He(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)said,
"Ifwhatyousayistruethenyouhavebackbittenabouthim,andifitisnottrue,thenyouhaveslandered
him."

ItwasnarratedthatIbn'Abbaas(mayAllaahbepleasedwithhim)said:
TheMessengerofAllah(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)passedbytwogravesandsaid,"They
arebeingpunished,buttheyarenotbeingpunishedforanythingthatwasdifficulttoavoid.Oneofthem
usedtowalkaboutspreadingmaliciousgossip(nameemah),andtheotherusednottotakeprecautionsto
avoidgettingurineonhimselfwhenheurinated."

Thenhecalledforagreenbranch,whichhesplitintwoandplantedapieceoneachgrave,andsaid,"May
theirtormentbereducedsolongasthesedonotdryout."
NarratedbyalBukhaari,213Muslim,292
ItwasnarratedthatAbuHurayrah(mayAllaahbepleasedwithhim)said:TheMessengerofAllaah(peace
andblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)said:

"Whoeverhaswrongedhisbrotherwithregardtohishonouroranythingelse,lethimseekhisforgiveness
today,beforetherewillbenodinarandnodirham,andifhehasanygooddeedstohiscredittheywillbe
takenfromhiminamannercommensuratewiththewronghedid,andifhehasnogooddeeds,thensomeof
hiscounterpart'sbaddeedswillbetakenandaddedtohisburden."
NarratedbyalBukhaari,2317.
ShaykhalIslamIbnTaymiyahsaid:
Whoeverwrongsapersonbyslanderinghim,backbitingabouthimorinsultinghim,thenrepents,Allaah
willaccepthisrepentance,butiftheonewhowaswrongedfindsoutaboutthat,hehastherighttosettlethe
score.
Butifheslanderedhimorbackbitabouthimandthepersondidnothearofthat,thentherearetwoviews
accordingtothescholars,bothofwhichwerenarratedfromAhmad,themorecorrectofwhichisthathe
shouldnottellhimthathespokeagainsthiminhisabsence.
Itwassaidthatheshouldratherspeakwellofhiminhisabsencejustashespokebadlyofhiminhis
absence,asalHasanalBasrisaid:Theexpiationforgheebahistoprayforforgivenessforthepersonabout

SituationsinwhichBackbitingisPermissible
FromImaamanNawawi'sRiyaadussaaliheenp519
Gheebah(backbiting)ispermissibleforasoundreligiouspurposethatcannotbeachievedexceptbyusing
it.

ThesepermissibletypesofGheebahareasfollows:
1.Complaintbecauseofaninjustice,suchascomplainingtoaruler,judgeorothersinauthority.
Apersonmaysayinthiscase:
"Iwastreatedunjustlybysoandsoinsuchandsuchmatter."

2.SeekinghelptochangeaMunkar(wrongdeed)andtocorrectthewrongdoers.
Apersonmaysay:
"Apersondoessuchandsuch,sostophim."HisintentionshouldbetochecktheMunkar.Ifthisisnotthe
case,thenthestatementisHaraam.
3.SeekingaFatwa.
ApersonmaystatetotheImam,MuftiorShaikh,
"Myfather,brotherorsoandsohastreatedmeunfairly.Isthatactpermissible?AndhowdoIgetoutof
thissituation?HowdoIobtainmyrights?"
ThiswayofseekingaFatwaispermissible.However,itissaferandmorepreferabletosaywhateverwould
besaidaboutanonspecificpersonasdoingsuchandsuch,asanonymouslyaspossible.
4.WarningMuslimsagainstevilandadvisingthem.
Thiscouldincludecriticismofuntrustworthynarratorsorwitnesses.ThisispermissiblebyIjmaa',ratherit
ismandatoryandthebenefitisveryclear.
Suchasconsultinginthemattersofmarriageorabusinesspartnership.Inthiscase,thepersonconsulted
shouldnothideanythingabouttheconcernedperson.Heshouldmentionthefaultyqualitiesonlywiththe
intentionofbenefitingtheconsultant.
5.MentioningthepersonwhoindulgesinHaraamorBid'ahopenly.
ThiswouldincludementioningthosewhoopenlydrinkKhamrorthoseinpositionsofauthoritydoing
wrong.
Itispermissibletomentionthesinofsuchaperson.However,itisprohibitedtomentionthepersonwitha
differentsinunlessthereisareasonthatmakesitpermissibletodosoforthatsin.
6.Identifyingaperson.
Ifapersonisknownbyadescriptivenickname,suchasAlA'mash(squinteyed),AlA'raj(onewhowalks
withalimp),orAlAsamm(deaf),thenitispermissibletousethesenamesforidentificationpurposes.
Butitisnotpermittedtousethesenamesiftheintentionistoinsulttheperson.Ifitispossibletoidentify
suchpersonbyusinganotherdescriptivename,thenitisbetterandpreferable.
