Are learning styles

addressed? How?

I would say that the general nature of

this field trip is so very hands on and
kinesthetic, that this is an
unintentional teaching modification.
Additionally, there is an opportunity for
students who speak Spanish to receive
translation in their first language.
The learning environment is an
extremely diverse area with many
opportunities for students to construct
his or her own conceptualization of
nature and the processes that occur
within a diverse ecosystem. The
students are sharing their discoveries
with each other allowing them to have
opportunities for processing new
information in new ways. Additionally,
the field trip allows students to connect
to previously learned information in
ways that are both meaningful to them,
as well as involving all senses of the
body.
Students who participate in WinterTrek
are also encouraged to predict and ask
questions regarding their prior beliefs
concerning habitat and nature, and ask
what is going on (cognitive

What are the benefits of
this field trip location?
There are many
benefits of the
WinterTrek field trip
location, including scenic
beauty, diverse terrain,
diverse wildlife,
spectacular views and
many opportunities for
discourse and learning.

disequilibrium). By doing so, the

teacher and Ranger can provide
information allowing students to
reconstruct their beliefs in valid ways
which make sense to them by being in
the actual environment they are
learning about (Martin, 2012).
Wintertrek provides students with
guided inquiry in an authentic setting.
The students work together to make
conjectures and predictions based upon
their background knowledge and
familiarity with the Heavenly/Lake
Tahoe landscape and snowshoes.
During this guided tour, the Teacher
and ranger have opportunity to walk
around to ask questions, address
misunderstandings, and illicit higher
order thinking.
The diversity of cultures, abilities
and/or language among students are
addressed specifically by providing a
Spanish speaking ranger, and
snowmobile for disabled students.
What are the challenges to conduct a
field trip at this location?
However, in this varied terrain, certain
challenges include inaccessibility to
location due to weather for buses,
gondolas (wind hold) as well as
students who have a disposition to
altitude sickness and exertion.
Students should bring lunches, snacks
and water, as well as sunscreen, gloves
and proper winter clothing for skin
protection.
